JASON NEWSTED Says He Became Spiritually Rich From Meeting METALLICA Fans - Feb. 10, 2013
Katherine Turman of The Village Voice recently conducted an interview with former METALLICA, VOIVOD and FLOTSAM AND JETSAM bassist and current NEWSTED frontman Jason Newsted. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

On NEWSTED's debut EP, "Metal":

Jason: "This was created because of the fans. I went to play the 30th reunion with METALLICA in December 2011, at the Fillmore (in San Francisco), and I got completely lit up by the fans. It was a fan-club operation, about 30 or 35 countries represented, all kinds of languages screaming at me. It made me want to come back to this. I'm doing it for them."

"I've played many different styles. With ECHOBRAIN (the side project that caused a schism within METALLICA), VOIVOD, GOV'T MULE, DJ SHADOW, all those different styles. There'd been mixed reactions as I reached out into those places, so when I come back with what I do best, the old-school metal, that's why it's getting the [positive] reaction it is."

On playing with Ozzy Osbourne in the bass slot once occupied by Robert Trujillo, who replaced Newsted in METALLICA:

Jason: "He called out a song that I hadn't rehearsed ever before, and I'm in front of 22,000 people. Ozzy screams out 'The Wizard'. He looks over at me. . . . But because I learned from BLACK SABBATH when there was only vinyl — needle back, needle back, needle back — it was all the way from my toes. I go: 'OK, how old am I? 16?' And there I was. I have posters still adhered to my bedroom wall in my room at my dad's house in Michigan — BLACK SABBATH. I saw them this Christmas. When the guy that taught you to play metal asks you to be in his band, it's a surreal experience."

On his relationship with the fans while he was in METALLICA:

Jason: "Everybody assumed their roles in METALLICA. James [Hetfield] was the songwriter, Lars was the business guy, Kirk [Hammett] was the artist, and I was the people person. I always was pushed out front — because no one else wanted to do it at the time — with fans and also the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the cancer kids. That was my bag: traveling across the country, across the world, to do some of these things on METALLICA's behalf. Little did [METALLICA] know that they were the ones missing out. But because I was the ambassador for the band, I became [spiritually] rich from it."

On the NEWSTED song "Godsnake", in which he writes about remaining humble and nonjudgmental:

Jason: "In our society now, at least in North America, the encouragement in reality TV is to be judgmental. The biggest loser, the addict, the pregnant teen, judge, judge, judge. It's the exact opposite of what's supposed to happen to make this world go round."

Dave Mustaine says he became "spiritually rich" by meeting some Southern guy in a white suit with a bushy moustache and a bunch of rattlesnakes in a box, with his wife and kids carryinh "god hates fags" signs...

Jason should've left Metallica after the TBA tour. That's when they needed a wakeup call. Metallica hasn't done 1 fucking decent thing since.

Personally I have always loved Jason when he was in Metallica. The way he played bass, the sound he had, the way he moved on stage... it defined what a bass player should be. Over the years, especially since he left the band, I'd say he became even more visible and people started to hear his voice and true self. It's hard to say with celebrities, since they live on a a world regular folks like us will never even touch, but as celebs go, Jason sure sounds like the classiest act of them all... And his new stuff is fricking solid!

I remember a Jason interview from the late nineties. He was talking about how he was let down as a teenager when Kiss had taken the make up off, and he said "honestly, they haven't done a decent album eversince". I found it kinda ironic as this was the Load era with the controversial hair cuts and stuff...lol

I like the way Jason got his dig in, even without appearing to. He says "little did they know they were the ones missing out". Sad, anyone who really thinks that Metallica cares about them in any way is so far from reality. Jason may want to be nice, but why, Metallica are multi millionaires, there life is so far removed from the "real folk" it is ridiculous. Lars needs to go buy another $10,000,000 dollar painting, leave making music to Jason and those that havent forgotten where they came from. Tallica suck, Tallica have become what they hated, it's that simple, why do they continue to try and act like they have anything in common with thier so called fans, they do not, thats why they cant make a fucking record that is any good, they are to worried about thier latest real estate deal or art deal, fuck Tallica, there aint no metal left on the bone.

The peoples Rock Star! Hands down the coolest mo fo in metal. It cracks me up to see those shitty no name or washed up bands treat the fans like shit when someone like Jason who in one of the biggest bands in the worlds always take time. He knows he will forget about in in 5 seconds, but fans remember that for life!

James probably doesn't like meeting the fans. He seems to be hard to get a hold of for interviews. He's not out a lot, and has never done Eddie Trunk's show. Hetfield was throwing rocks at the paparozzi somewhere, when he was with his son.

Eddie trunk sucks balls, that metal show should be called that "anything after 1985 sucks because we're too old to get it" show, they barely talk about anything that happened after 1985.

... I wouldn't want to be hounded by 10,000 people all of the time either. Some people are just inwardly more private than others. Doesn't mean he doesn't want to play music, it just means he wants to be left alone.

I have had a TON of opportunities to meet band members over the past 25 years and the only times that I have actually went through with it is when it was a mutual meeting or a setting where I could buy the guy a beer or something without 2000 other people standing around them. Anytime I see that mob gathering, I run the other way.

What is so hard about respecting people's privacy?

That guy was a important employee of the Metallica Corporation. Jason singing on 'Whiplash' or 'Seek & Destroy' back when he was in, was pretty badass. It's a shame they had to let him go.

Musically, I am liking Newstead. It's good. I like it. His vocals aren't as bad as I thought they were going to be.

Lyrically though, the guy needs to hire a proof-reader for his lyrics because they are flat out terrible.

"Try to not get dead" and my personal favorite "By the teeth of my skin".

Jason fail English? Unpossible.

.... that makes these guys so cool. Bass players always seem to be the classiest people in rock.... Jason, Michael Anthony, Tom Hamilton, Jeff Pilson. Seems like whenever you have bands with ego issues, it is the bass player that is always the one grounded in reality and thinking about the fans.

Of course, there are exceptions to this.... (insert Gene Simmons joke here).

"the cancer kids", thanks Jason, I'm sure they'll appreciate being called that.

Also, it doesn't surprise me the slightest he did all the charity, since Hetfield was a raging alcoholic and an emotionally inept redneck, Lars and Kirk were nose deep in coke and the management was too busy growing beards and spending their share of Metallica's money.

Honestly, the more I think about it, the more I wonder how on earth Newsted lasted as long in Metallica as he did. In the late 80s and throughout the 90s dealing with man-child Hetfield, who since tries to be 'family man papa Het', Lars 'like' Ulrich spending his time sleeping and doing coke, Kirk 'nailpolish' Hammett who cries everytime the big boys make an argument.. I guess money does a lot for people to deal with dysfunctional people.

I went to 13 Tallica shows, met Jason at meet-n-greet, and I personally didn't notice his real human contact with fans. And I can't say anything that would indicate him as a people guy, he is quite neurotic and self-absorbed.
