MEGADETH: New Album Title, Record Label Revealed - Feb. 12, 2013
MEGADETH has set "Super Collider" as the title of its new album, due this June via MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine's new label, Tradecraft, which is distributed by Universal Music Enterprises(UMe).

"It was a real thrill for us to learn there was an opportunity to join Universal," said Mustaine. "It seems like every time you see a great band or music video, it comes from a Universal label.

"Being with Universal is by far the most exciting and prestigious home for MEGADETH ever! We are electrified with what the future holds and the possibilities such a powerhouse like Universal will bring for us all.

"We have worked with some great people over the years, and it is amazing to see so many of them on the Universal team for our new record, 'Super Collider'.

"If MEGADETH being here isn't satiating enough, having Tradecraft as my own label is going to be really amazing for metal bands around the world."

"Super Collider" is being recorded at Mustaine's Vic's Garage studio in San Marcos, California and is MEGADETH's first release its recent split with Roadrunner Records.

"Shawn [Drover, drums], Chris [Broderick, guitar] and David [Ellefson, bass] have all been feverishly contributing some great music and I believe we are doing our best work ever together in the studio right now," Mustaine said.

Speaking to Full Metal Jackie at last month's NAMM (National Association Of Music Merchants) show in Anaheim, California, Mustaine stated about the direction of the band's new material: "[MEGADETH bassist] David Ellefson is one of those guys that's kind of the barometer of the band. You ask me, you never really know what you're gonna get, but when you ask David Ellefson, it's kind of like reading the ingredients on the back of something, 'cause he's such a straight shooter. He told some people the other day that this is music that's really similar to [MEGADETH's 1985 debut album] 'Killing Is My Business... and Business Is Good!', some of the stuff — really dark, really heavy and fast stuff. I mean, I don't thnk it's really as fast and heavy as 'Killing' is, to me, but Junior is a great, like I said, barometer — bad word, but he knows what's going on."

On the topic of MEGADETH's current label situation, Mustaine said: "We have a new label. We left Roadrunner; we completed our contract with them, which not a lot of many metal bands have the luxury to have been able to complete contracts. They usually either break up or quit or give up and stuff like that, but we were honorable and finished our contract with them and we moved on. And we've actually got a fantastic relationship with a brand new label. We have eleven songs already recorded. We wanna give them thirteen, 'cause, you know, the B-sides and Japanese releases and all that kind of crazy stuff."

"MEGADETH is not just one of the most successful metal bands, but one of the most influential rock bands of the past 30 years," said UMe President/CEO Bruce Resnikoff in making the announcement. "They continue to be a huge draw on the road with their longtime fans as well as continually adding new fans. I look forward to working together with them."

With the recent acquisition of EMI, UMe now brings together MEGADETH's classic, 14-year, seven-album Capitol catalog, which includes one multi-platinum release ('92's "Countdown To Extinction"), four platinum records ('86's "Peace Sells... But Who's Buying?" ; '88's "So Far, So Good... So What?"; '90's "Rust in Peace"; '94's "Youthanasia"), and one gold ('97's "Cryptic Writings"). In all, the band has scored five U.S. Top 10 albums (including 2007's "United Abominations" and 2009's "Endgame") and two Top 5 releases, with 2011's "TH1RT3EN" debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard Hard Rock Albums chart.

In a January 24 post on his Facebook page, Ellefson wrote about the recording process for MEGADETH's new album: "Having a great week here at Vic's Garage laying down bass on the new songs. Really some great, great songs taking shape at this point in the recording process. I told Dave [Mustaine] today that one of them totally reminded me of the earliest stuff back when we first met. Fast, ripppin' and fully bringing the REAL old-school MEGADETH sound!!!"

Johnny K produced MEGADETH's last album, 2011's "TH1RT3EN", which was also recorded at Vic's Garage.

Not a very imaginative title... But then neither was '13' or 'Endgame'... very contrived.

However, MD has been putting out some decent material and at least they put out a new record every 2 - 3 years.

Look at Metallica, they have only put out 4 studio albums in the last 20 years and 3 of them sucked!

Megadeth 1993 - 2013:

Youthanasia (1994) - Liked it
Cryptic Writings (1997) - Loved it
Risk (1999) - Sucked
The World Needs a Hero (2001) - Liked it
The System Has Failed (2004) - Loved it
United Abominations (2007) - Loved it
Endgame (2009) - Liked it
Thirteen (2010) - Liked it
Super Collider (2013)

9 studio records in the past 20 years, most of which were pretty damn good records.

Metallica

Load (1996) - Liked it
Reload (1997) - Sucked
St. Anger (2003) - Sucked
Death Magnetic (2008) - Loved it

4 studio recordings in the past 20 years, 1 decent, 1 great, the rest garbage.

Live both bands have toured and played full albums, so they are even on that front. Although it's a lot easier to see Megadeth.

IMO Megadeth are the harder working band, with a stronger recent history. No one can ever doubt the brilliance of records like 'Master of Puppets', 'RTL', and 'Justice', but MD has 'Rust in Peace', 'Extinction', and 'Peace Sells' in their arsenal.

Bottom line is MD is a better band and produces more for their fans. Metallica is a 'convenience' act; when it's convenient to put out a studio record (apparently once every 5 - 6 years) they do it. And usually not well.

It's so he can say "I never said that" when it comes out and people are like "Hey Dave, this is even worse than Thirteen you utter cunt".

Super Collider?

What a fucking lame-ass name.

This from the band that once had awesome album titles:

Killing is my Business... and Business is Good
Peace Sells... But Who's Buying?
So Far, so Good... so What?
Rust in Peace
Countdown to Extinction
Youthanasia
The World Needs a Hero
Risk
Cryptic Writings
The System Has Failed
Endgame

Well I was only going to mention a few, but they ALL have good titles (United Abominations was pretty retarded and Th1rt3en pretty cheesy). Some of those albums above may have sucked ass, but at least they had cool titles. WTF is Super Collider? It sounds like a Status Quo album or some 70s pop rock shit.

sounds like a bad white zombie or machine head rip off.

ps: junior's approval of anything other than that of our lord and saviour Jesus Christ means NOTHING! He's just along for the marquee billing, making the band seem a LOT more legit with two founding members. The set-lists Dave Mustaine comes up with are Titanic sinking. All the hope in the world and then here comes the iceberg known as "trust" or "a trout le monde" or some crap.

FUCKING SUPER FUCKING COLL FUCKING IDER?

It sounds like a Supertramp record, or something by Queens of the Stone Age. THE FUCK MAN? Is Dave going to be writing stoner rock next? Christian stoner rock?

What kind of Megadeth record is called "Super Collider"?

I have a feeling these lyrics are going to be as stupid as the lyrics on the last 3 albums... that is to say, REALLY fucking stupid.

Did Dave Mustaine have a lobotomy at some point during the early-mid 2000s? He used to write really cool songs with cool lyrics... instead now we get his ramblings about "the New World Order", songs about God and childish bullshit like "death by da head crusha" and "you hate the way I wear my clothes".

Wow, has this band gone down the toilet or what? Watching old footage of them in the 90s... how far Dave has fallen. His hired guns suck ass too; wtf is with that slow, boring drummer and that shred-by-numbers guitarist?

Keep picking up the rear you sorry loser!! Pretty pathetic though to still be chasing Metallica after 30 years, especially since they totally suck balls now and yet he STILL aspires to be like them and even start a side project with them. LOL!!! I love how Hetfield PWNED him on that one!

Good reads today!

I think Monkeytime and Machine Dead had the best.
It is true, Megadeth have released a hell of a better catalog of records the last 20 years. There have been some misses, and some lame songs, but 80 percent good shit and 20 percent amazing stuff. Compared to Metallica that really only released one solid record with Death Magnetic...which happened to be nearly wrecked with a shitty volume wars mixing/mastering so it distorts and you can't hear the bass. The songs on dm were good though. Who'd have thought they could pull that out of their ass after so many years of losing their identity.

I will say one thing though...Metallica are still a better live band, especially in an arena. They are the masters of the metal show in an arena. I just saw the show where they filmed in Edmonton for the 3d movie, and it took my breath away it was so fucking heavy and well played. Damn. It was ridiculously good. They played maybe 2 weak songs in a 20 song setlist. I saw Megadeth 5 times in the last few years, and they are boring live...sorry to say. Especially with the boring drone Drover on drums. Geez, is that the best they could do when hiring for one of the best metal bands in the world? He cheats on songs by using his feet instead of his arms (too tiring?). He show minimal life on stage behind his kit. His fills are so bland and simplistic. Well I guess he keeps the beat and doesn't overshadow the guitar?

There is NO WAY Megadeth could go on stage after Metallica after seeing the recent Metallica shows. Impossible. People would just walk out. Maybe if Megadeth had the rust in peace lineup and it was in a club environment....then maybe they could follow metallica.

And good point above Machine Dead. Shitting out album after album is not a good idea. Maybe they can pull it off, but 13 had some weak tracks that could have been trimmed off. Guns drugs and money and wrecker are horrible. There are some great tunes though to counter those.

that's a very juvenile title, like Machine Head's Super Charger, almost as bad as what Ozzy was going to call his, Super Sucka, or was it Soul Sucka? Don't quite recall. I hope the music is better than the title... Universal??? Perhaps Dave should have called Joe Elliott and discussed this label over a spot of tea.

You can't just add a .5 to the ratings. The original system was whole numbers. Where the hell do you get off changing the rating system? Do you think you can just make it up as you go along? The nerve! :-)

And how can ANYONE not give Peace Sells a 10/10?

Cuz they were all over 13, Dave. Think about that -- frickin' Disturbed's producer and a guy who left the band eons ago get writing credits. Talk about a dry well.

Methinks this is pretty much Dave's last chance to turn Broderick loose to write -- if the guy is even up to it. Who knows? This album, and a two year cycle of touring it might just be the end unless it finds a new source of energy.

And who IS producing this time, anyway?

Starting your own label is a great move for Megadeth at this point.

I think System from 2004 will go down in history as the last good album saying "megadeth" on the cover.

prove me wrong & good luck with drover

fact is it's just a different band these days.

I think between 1995 and 2002 they could have matched metallica if they really tried. they had quite a strong stage presence at least until risk came out.
aging is one thing and all fair, they lost a LOT of their fire when capitol dropped them, you could literally see their stage qualities dwindle between the cryptic writings tour and the one for the world needs a hero.
I remember thinking that nick is missing a bit, but degrasso was still doing a great job, but pitrelli was a big downer. but there were some great shows on that tour because dave was pissed off, and that's when he used to be best. too bad the reason IMO probably was that dave basically knew the major label megadeth is done.

when mustaine came back in 2004, it was a campfire, not cannons going off. did not realize it then since the album was pretty strong, all the old tunes from rust and so far and his decent voice in the beginning.

Lame title. I wonder if Vic will be featured prominently on the cover? However it comes - I just hope there is some truth in the comparisons Ellefson has made.

It would be great to hear some brutal thrash jams.

soudns like this new album will be mnuch heavier. Super Conductor isnt a bad album title either. I think they should bring back "lookin down the cross' to their live set that song would sound awesome live

Wishing for Megadeth to return to their thrashing glories of the 80s is just delusional. This band lost its hatred, hunger and drive to ever release another "Peace Sells...". Whatever the band says in press releases to boost the pre-orders of this album, the reality is that there might be 2-3 good tracks among the 12 on the offer. Among these 1 or 2 will make it in their regular setlist and they'll go on for another 2 years on tour until the 'other great new album' hype machine will be back again.

As somewhat of a science geek I find this album title interesting. The Super Collider is a nuclear particle accelerator under the Swiss-French border.

I wonder what Dave Mustaine's lyrical content will be for this topic.
