IRON MAIDEN Song Used In Literature Class - Feb. 18, 2013
According to Amarillo.com, West Texas A&M University professor Martin Jacobsen recently fused metal music and literature classes by using the "Out Of The Silent Planet" track off IRON MAIDEN's 2000 album "Brave New World" during a class exercise, presenting visual diagrams of lyrics construction with the music playing at the same time.

"The students were mad for it," the professor tells Amarillo.com. "They just thought it was crazy and they loved it. I threw it out there just as an offhand comment one day — 'What we ought to do is have a class in heavy metal' — and there was universal agreement from the students in the class, like, 'Yes, we should actually do that.'"

The class exercise was such a hit that Jacobsen is now teaching a new course called "Introduction To Literature: Heavy Metal As A Literary Genre". The professor explains that many metal lyricist have been inspired by some of the greatest writers of all time.

"You constantly see these nods to the intellectual tradition that these writers, these lyricists come from," he said. "It's connected itself and grounded itself in literary tradition. Therefore it's reasonable to conclude that it is a form of literature as well as a form of music. In much the same way, you might say country music is a species of folklore."

22-year-old student Eric Bauer, who got really into heavy metal in middle school with METALLICA, thinks heavy metal is a broader genre than it gets credit for.

"In the lyrics of heavy metal, you can write about anything," he said. "Social issues, the human experience, wizards and dragons — if you're interested in a subject, there's probably a heavy metal song about it."

Only the typical close minded university people (and everywhere for that matter) feel heavy metal is a bad thing.

...in my 12th grade English class back in 1988. We had to read the poem, so I told my teacher that a band I listened to based on song on it. She invited me to bring it in to play for the class. I "failed" to mention to her that it was a metal song and that it was 13 minutes long! What makes it all the funnier was that the teacher was black. I only mention this because hearing the bombastic opening of the song stunned her. She was not expecting that!

My mother, who was a high school English teacher for years throughout the 90s used it her class as well. But she said the kids always laughed at it because back then, metal wasn't cool.

Regardless, "Rime" is definitely one of Maiden's all time best.

There have to be better Maiden songs than "Out of the Silent Planet" if you're studying lyrics. That one just repeats the title line again and again, and it's basically a book title anyways. What about the "The Trooper"?

in my 12th grade British Lit class. Had to write a paper on the poem and referenced the song and even quoted it. The teacher circled that part and wrote, "Nice!" and got an A. It was the first time I got an A on something that challenging.

Up the Irons!

Same here! My teacher told me to bring it in and she loved it, as did a few of the kids. Anything that got us out of work for 13 minutes was alright by them.

When I was in High School, we were studying the plight of the American Indians and my teacher let me play Run to the Hills in class. I even wrote up the lyrics and displayed them on the overhead projector.

i'm a little of topic, like to share my experience with bringing music in the classroom, it was 1979 i was in grade 8 thought it would cool for my classmates to hear Ted Nugent Double Live Gonzo the part where he says "if anyone wants to get mellow they can turn around and get the fuck out of here".

It was the first time i think i heard swearing on a record, beside Frampton Comes Alive with the wah wah vox. The teach walked in not so happy ripped the needle off the vinyl. Maybe because it was Catholic school. i should've brought in Catholic Girls by Frank Zappa.

Best Swearing Album is Jayne County and the Electric Chairs Rock n' Roll Resurrection

Really, really cool. It's good to know there are open-minded teachers out there that appreciate heavy metal and use it in their lessons. (I wonder how many of them used Iced Earth's "Glorious Burden" when teaching about the Civil War?)

One of the best tunes on Brave New World...great tempo, nice cruch, killer vocal from Bruce...love it! When I read the headline, was totally expecting Rime of the Ancient Mariner. Bruce = High IQ...can you imagine anyone reciting that epic live without error? No teleprompters for Bruce...I guess that is why he hates Ozzy...

I work as a substitute teacher and I have taught lessons about Ronnie James Dio in schools. It has been well received so why not Maiden? Especially because some of their songs are about events in history.
