ANTHRAX's SCOTT IAN: 'We've Only Ever Had Two Singers, That's The Way I Look At It' - Feb. 21, 2013
Brett Woodward of The Sydney Morning Herald recently conducted an interview with ANTHRAX guitarist Scott Ian. A few excerpts from the chat follow below.

On the creative potential of his suite of Mac gadgets:

Scott: "If you walked backstage at [Autralia's] Soundwave [festival], all those bands and crew, you'd see dozens of people sitting around watching videos, online, sending emails, or getting ideas down. It's keeping people from becoming alcoholics and drug addicts. I know that's a weird way to look at it, but it has to be true!

''Back when we first started touring in the '80s, I could completely understand why bands from the '60s and '70s started boozing and doing drugs on tour. Fight off boredom and get through the day until the exciting part, the show!''

On ANTHRAX's singer changes over the years:

Scott: "We've only ever had two singers, that's the way I look at it. It's Joey [Belladonna, 13 years as vocalist] and John [Bush, 14 years], and that's it. I've been lucky enough to have worked with two amazing singers.

''Across our catalogue, songs off 'Fistful of Metal' [1984] certainly sound different to songs off 'Volume 8' [1998], which sound different to songs off 'We've Come for You All' [2003]. But to me, as one of the parents of the whole thing, I see them all as my children. Some have brown hair, some have blond hair, some have red hair!"

On thrash metal's longevity:

Scott: "It comes down to the truth of the music we've been making since the beginning of our career. We were just kids, exactly like our fans. We've only ever been honest about what we do and that still holds true.

"All these years later, kids still connect with that. You look out into our audience, amongst a sea of people, 15-, 16-, 17-year-olds who are listening to records we made 26 years ago. It's mind-blowing. People connect to the honesty and they stay with us. That loyalty is a two-way street."

On ANTHRAX's upcoming "Anthems", an EP of covers by AC/DC, RUSH, CHEAP TRICK, THIN LIZZY, JOURNEY and BOSTON:

Scott: "These covers were done all over the world, recording guitars in hotel rooms and backstage on laptops. We send tracks back and forth; our guys mix it and make it sound like a live band playing together in one room, which couldn't be further from the truth! Though, at some point this year, I'm going to come into the jam room at my house, or Charlie's [Benante, drums], with some ideas recorded on my iPhone. I swear, we get in that room, sit there and stare at each other in silence, and then the shit just starts to happen. Someone will come up with that one little part, the genesis. Two hours later you've got the arrangement and a whole new song."

Sure he was only in the band for a short time, but he sang on an album. A decent album.

Funny how you mention Fistful right after that statement.

Just when I thought Scott Ian couldn't get any more douchey! Okay, both Joey and to a slightly lesser extent John Bush are well known, long standing frontmen of Anthrax, but trying to erase Neil Turbin's role in Anthrax's formative years is really low. I love Anthrax's music, but Scott really is a grade A idiot! Fistful has some great material, and I love Neil's vocals on it! Though to me, Joey is Anthrax's definitive frontman.

excluding the singer for one's first album speaks volumes.

what turbin is doing with this deathriders nostalgia act might be a cheap shot, but he does not hurt anthrax reputation and obviously has no other chance like quite some other musicians from the early days who mistook their 5 mins of fame for a career.

Ian on the other hand has made it, but still proves he is ignorant and selfish enough to pick a cheap move over the high road.

Scott would be among the first to underline that mustaine was a major force in crafting and establishing the sound of early metallica.

I actually feel ashamed to have witnessed anthrax wipe the floor with megadeth, slayer and metallica in the czech rep. 3 years ago.

hey Rosenfeld, I know you read BB and MS as you wouldn't be trying to cover your ass as you are. Fistful of Metal was your first album and it was damn good, part of the reason it is damn good is because of Neil.

Just another example of Scott having zero interpersonal skills and trying to pass himself off as a 'good guy'. Give it a break Rosenfeld, we see right through you.

Because I have a hypocrisy radar, let's point out the one permeating this thread, shall we? Anthrax had THREE singers, Scott!! You can't leave out Neil just because you don't like him. But wait...haven't they actually had FOUR singers?
People here seem to be leaving out Nelson because they don't like him, but he was technically a singer for Anthrax, and we are talking about "number of singers" as someone lashed out earlier. OK, hypocrisy radar off, moving on to less dark and dreary climes.

Trick question?

The interviewer should have followed up with "and how many vocalists have been in the band?"

It's pretty common knowledge that Scott has no fondness for Joey, but has to tolerate him to maintain their fan base as large as possible. If Joey were gone tomorrow, Scott would trash him in every interview he does. (In fact he's been pretty ambivalent about Joey during interviews when they reunited for Worship music, and only now seems to be resigning himself to the reality that Joey defines Anthrax's sound better than Scott himself does!)

This guy and Kerry Queen should team up and form a band comprising only total social write-offs. They can call it "Antisocial" if Scott wants (which, being an egomaniac, he will). They can have:

Kerry & Scott: Guitars
Geoffrey Tate: Vocals
Lars Ulrich: Drums
David Vincent: Bass

featuring guest appearances by Axl Rose, Dave Mustaine, Vivian Campbell and Gene Simmons.

You clowns googling previous singers and ripping on Scotty for this comment, John Bush and Joey Belladonna have 27 years between them, all the others put together have four with a grand total of one album and that was before any of you assholes had heard of Anthrax.

He's fucking right, they have only really had two singers so stop pretending you care about Dirk Kennedy when you don't even give a shit about Anthrax.

While I agree that bringing in the other singers that were there before FoM is nitpicking, and the Turbin/Fistful was only a couple years and 1 album back 30 years ago. Its more of a point of how Scott Ian answers questions. He couldn't just say "we've had some variety with singers", or "we had to make changes based on what was right at the time" or whatever. Those comments acknowledge the changes, but aren't trashing anyone. But Scott Ian has to make a comment that totally dismisses everyone except Joey and Bush. Just like his pre-Joey reunion comment about needing a Lion instead of a Bird. Give it enough time, Joey will be out again and we'll see how diplomatic and respectful he is of Joey once he's gone for the 3rd time.

While I agree that its wrong for Scott to completely dismiss Neil, I don't see the point in including the other singers who were never on albums. I think what he was trying to say was that there were only 2 singers during the times the band was popular, which is true. But to dismiss Neil as irrelevant is a very poor move on Scott's part. Don't piss on your legacy!

Neil Turbin was a great singer, even the cockroaches know that......the pivot of the matter is that the album FISTFUL OF METAL is a very good album and VOL. 8 and WE'VE COME FOR.... are lousy, dear Scott. John Bush is a great singer too, but during those 14 years John had not the possibility to sing in a good album.
Dear Scott, WORSHIP MUSIC is avery good album, but do not forget that from 1991 to 2013 Anthrax were useless.........

the deal with these so-called "big 4" bands lately? Scott Ian doesn't even acknowledge that Anthrax had quite a few singers, and therefore takes a poke at Neil Turbin just to be an asshole. Mission accomplished, Scott.
While Kerry King is up his own attempts to out-douche (tm) Ian by fucking over Dave Lombardo. Which I can't even fathom doing since Slayer is NOTHING without Lombardo.
Megadave?..well. nuff said.
As same goes for Metallica.
What happened to these bands?

Take a lesson off of bands like Testament and Kreator. Proof positive since their latest albums outshine anything these "big 4" bands have put out in the last decade. When nothing else matters (sorry James) but the music. Great music happens. I can see no good coming from any of these "big 4" bands in the near future. Between Megadave, Scott Ian and Kerry King all turning into complete assholes, and pretty much turning into money hoarders and selfish pigs.

Remember when it was all for the music?

Yeah, me too.

Anthrax consistently wrote good stuff with Joey, so I was disappointed when he left. But then "Sound of White Noise" impressed me so much that I consider it their best album. Saw them live a few years later and John Bush was great. Unfortunately I never cared much for the other John Bush albums. Not because of the vocals...I just didn't think the songs were as solid.

Yes Neil Turbin was the singer on their first album, so if that's your favorite album then that's probably a big deal. But when I think of Anthrax, I think of the Joey years and the John years.

I happen to know for a mortal fact that Scott has mounted a behind the scenes campaign to keep Neil from getting any kind of a break in the industry for years now.

That being said, Neil refuses to give up, and is producing what is going to be a kickass Deathriders debut disk. Neil is one of the hardest working guys in metal (bar none), and one of the nicest you would ever want to meet as well. He refuses to speak ill of the guys in Anthrax, even though he has every right to. He operates under the mantra that the best revenge is success.

Some people are winners and some people are whiners. Neil is a winner, and Scott...well, you read the article.

Nah dickhead, just someone who works in the industry for over 25 years.

Pay attention and you just might learn a little something.

Aah, the irony in that statement is priceless.

You lie to us and we are no longer loyal.

I'm clearly over-reacting but I'm fucking pissed about the Slayer bullshit today. And Scott just annoys me in general.

Anyone remember that Guitar World cover/article when Scott and Kerry were blowing each other about how they're the best rhythm guitarists in metal?

I was being sarcastic. Scott is forgetting all about Neil in this thread. It's as ridiculous if Steve forgot about Blaze is my point.

He no longer has any credibility. He clearly prefers Bush and would drop Belladonna like a bag of shit to have Bush back. But since Bush got dropped like a bag of shit for a money tour with Belladonna and Spitz...
How the mighty have fallen. 25 years ago he and others (King, Benante) were unquestionably legendary. I guess you do live long enough to see yourself become the villain

Don't forget that Dan Lilker was important in the formation of Anthrax, and according to Danny, he named the band. Yet Ian says he named the band. Two stories, one truth. Revisionist Ian.
