METALLICA Drummer Discusses 'Orion Music + More' Festival In New Interview - Feb. 26, 2013
Revolver magazine recently conducted an interview with METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

Revolver: What are your favorite memories from last year's Orion Music + More festival?

Lars: That whole experience I had in my film tent. It was just so cool to show movies to 300 METALLICA fans and do Q&As with the directors and the producers. I also enjoyed getting a chance to play "Ride The Lightning" and doing the "Black Album" thing in its entirety, which was the only time we did it in America. And just hanging and being part of the scenery for a couple days. I had fun seeing the bands, too, in the various tents, from the HOT SNAKES to the Jim Breuers of the world. Seeing AVENGED SEVENFOLD and THE SWORD and SEPULTURA and ARCTIC MONKEYS. I got a chance to introduce the ARCTIC MONKEYS, which was really cool, because I have a 14-year-old kid who worships the ground that the ARCTIC MONKEYS walk on. So I actually was a pretty cool dad for a couple minutes when I introduced them.

Revolver: What made you want to include an EDM stage this year?

Lars: When we played at the Outside Lands Festival in San Francisco in August, both Hetfield and I went over to the… OK, now I'm lying. Our kids dragged us over to the electronic tent. [laughs] And I stood on the side of the stage and watched 20-25,000 14-year-old kids go absolutely fucking apeshit to Skrillex. And the energy and the whole spectacle with the lights and the sound, it was just such a fucking vibe. And so we both stood there with our kids and were like, You know what? We've got to bring some of that to the Orion festival. And Bassnectar is awesome. He's one of these dudes within that whole world, and he's actually one of the local Northern California dudes and we hear he's a bit of metal fan. So he's headlining the whole electronic tent

Revolver: Will you be playing any of your classic albums this year?

Lars: If I was a betting man, which I'm not, I would probably not put too much money on that. I think you've got to be careful that it doesn't become something that people expect from you every year, especially when you only put records out every five years like we do. We'll run out of records to play at some point pretty quick. But I think, listen, we've played "Puppets" [in 2006], we've played "Lightning", and we've played the "Black Album." I think it's something that we'll keep doing throughout METALLICA's next decade or so, but I don't know if we're going to do it at this year's Orion festival. Obviously there's an anniversary there. People say, "Oh, it's the 30th anniversary of 'Kill 'Em All'." But we haven't made a firm decision on that. I don't want to become predictable.

I don't expect 2013 Metallica to throw an all metal fest, but at the very least they could give some spots to metal bands that don't suck and could use the exposure. This is the 21st century equivalent of Metallica getting the shaft in favor of Frankie Goes To Hollywood or some other flavor of the month 80s crap.

Pretty much how I felt about last year's. They thumb their noses at bands that are in the position they were in when they started out.

This is bay far the worst line up ever. I like quite a few of these bands but I really don't want to spend money to see them. What about bringing bands like Holy Grail, Cauldron, Machine Head, Municipal Waste, Toxic Holocaust,

That's a different Death. All black band from the 70s that kind of sound like The Stooges. Great band.

Thank you, somebody had to say it.

Do people really think that a band with a dead frontman can really be re-activated just like that. Alright, well yes it's a totally believable concept, nevermind I forgot we were talkin about the music industry here.

Anyway yes, Death were an all black punk band from the 70's. If people can't seem to get past that then sorry, don't know what to tell them.

Why can't Metallica just do normal shows? I really don't want to sit through a bunch of bullshit to see them play. They never come around here but on the off chance they do I have to sit the through the Joy unfuckable?

...the theory of chemistry is never more evident than with the Chilis. The new guy is a cold turd, but even when they had Navarro it didnt work. And he is ,on paper, perfect for the gig. Its Fruciante or nothing, for me.
But any way, IF they didnt suck ,and Metallica was at their peak(they are still better than 90% of bands out there),along with Fu Manchu, Death, Dropkicks ,AND THE BRONX!(badass band, reminds me of Warrior Soul, with better songs and vocals), is a decent show.
BassNectur is kinda weird, kinda cool, kinda lame. A kid at work forced me to listen to that shit a couple of times and I cant say it was totally stupid. I was surprised how he managed to create a "human" element into all electronic music. But ,unless he's handing out free shrooms at the gate, Ill pass.

Agreed but they used to be so awesome. I was big into the oi scene here in Atlanta and thy used to play here all the time the shows were always epic some of the most fun punk shows ive ever been to were early dropkick shows. Their original lineup with their first singer was great. The first 2 or 3 albums with Al Barr are good as well. After that they became a parody Irish band like Flogging Molly.

I remember during the second Summer Sanitarium tour run, Metallica Fans booed Limp Bizkit off the stage in Chicago...I'm just gonna say, Detroit fans, be honest with yourself, if you don't like who's on stage *cough*SilversunPickups*cough*, let em know, really really loudly.

Don't throw any bottle though, s'not cool.

Hetfield can't hit those notes and it's just sad when he tries. I say play them as instrumentals.

As much as people love to see bands tour heavily, Metallica's heavy touring through the years has lead to james hetfield loosing his voice practically. If they hadnt of toured so relentlessly during '91-'00 years, James could probably still sing the songs of kill em all the way they need to be sung

The only way for them to redeem them self from this shit fest lineup is for them to play the whole AJFA album both nights .
