VAN HALEN's DAVID LEE ROTH: 'I Listen Constantly And I Sing And Dance Constantly' - Feb. 27, 2013
Kathy McCabe of Australia's The Daily Telegraph recently conducted an interview with VAN HALEN singer David Lee Roth. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

The Daily Telegraph: Is the concert in Australia part of your quest to get VAN HALEN out of America and touring the world again?

Roth: Clearly. The Van Halens, I think, are just now starting to value that which once was, which was the capacity to experience other worlds, other communities, particularly when you are a stranger in a stranger land. I find that so refreshing. And you gotta be prepared to be a beginner, you gotta be prepared to not have your cheesburger and fries, you gotta be prepared for a lot. In the days back when, we would come off the road after a full year out, I would walk straight though to the international terminal and head for an adventure. I have earned the stars and scars. Kathy, we were shooting some film the other day and I said to the make-up lady in Japanese: "You see there are eight lines on my forehead? Each one is named after an ex-girlfriend." And she points to the third and says and "Which one is this, Dave?" "That's Stacey from Dallas."

The Daily Telegraph: Is there still that fire in the belly when you walk on stage?

Roth: That fire starts down around little Elvis long before it reaches the belly. Yeah, I named my dick. Actually I think it was Stacey who did. You think I'm kidding? My fire starts long before we even start to rehearse let alone get to the stage. I collect music, like, by weight. There are still three Tower Records stores here, four floors of actual CDs, you can hold them in your hands like belt buckles. If I cup my hands I can pile CDs all the way up to my chin. I myself have four or five things I really love to listen to and I am able to investigate deeply into that here. I listen constantly and I sing and dance constantly. I chose this apartment because it has a cool wooden floor and with the right socks you can get a four-foot slide.

I've gotta say, regardless of whether or not he still has the goods, he really does seems like a happy guy. Granted, he's bazaar. But whatever happens he always seems to be up. That's kind of cool. Or maybe he does mountains of cocaine.

Dave still has that lovable and bizzaar attitude that made him one of the greatest frontmen of all time, hands down.

Now, if he'd just quit the lounge act schtick on stage, and attempt to just sing the songs "as they were recorded", he'd STILL be stellar onstage.

glorified lounge singer...in possibly the greatest American rock n' roll band of all time, yes...and an author, radio personality, emergency medical technician, martial artist, herding dog trainer & enthusiast, artist/painter, ou know... but nobody pays attention to any of that shit.

while I'll admit he gets loungier by the day, you completely dismiss(proposely because you like Van Hager) that he was a completely balls to the wall front man in his day. Jagger isn't Jagger any more either. Ian GIllan? Tyler, you name them, they all grow old.

Everyone still pays attention to the great music he made with VH. that's lasting. I suppose Van Hager lasts in hockey rinks, where that keyboard music plays well on the organ.

He's a weirdo, but in a totally cool way. Life would be so boring if there weren't any eccentrics around.

I have no doubt he would get on my last nerve if I had to work with him daily, especially back in the day when he was even more manic, but still...one of the greatest front men in history.

and always is quote-worthy, but Sammy once said of him that he's like a robot, he's always "on" with this crazy salesperson/wackjob artist character and he can't really relate to people in a real way. it's like he's always performing, even when just talking and hanging out.

i don't know for sure, but i suspect that's the truth.

who cares if he can't relate to real people, he made great music. Hagar may be better to have a beer with, but do you want to listen to the music? Rock me. I already have people I can relate to.

Tower Records... those were the days.

I used to go to the one in Atlanta all the damn time when I was in college there in the '90's. It was open till midnight so on a whim at 10:30 at night my friends and I would be like, "Hey, let's go to Tower!"

Hell, one of my dearly departed friends got married justice-of-the-peace style, and when it was done they were both like, "Hey, let's go to Tower!"

It was by Rich's in Lenox, and was awesome. Hard to find stuff, good sales, tons of 'zines... then it moved to the old Media Play off of Peachtree/Piedmont and was never the same, and then it folded.

That picture makes Dave look like Berry from Storage Wars. He does seem like a cool guy and would be a trip to have a conversation with. Imagine all the things hes experienced in the last 35 years. Love the newest VH album and hope they keep that momentum going. Respect.

I always wonder when DLR went off the rails and what caused it?
Was it the failed solo career that really started w/ YFLM and ended with his terrible effort on Magna Carta?
or was it the constant failures of trying to remain in the publics eye by doing radio, vegas shows, bleugrass, each time failing and falling further from rock god status?
With each failed effort DLR became a bigger parody of himself each time he tried to gain publicity for his efforts ( Roth on Leno with Robin Williams )
(backyard BBQ videos and songs )
Hard to imagine that Roth, whom was no doubt the king of rock from VH to EEAS to SKYSCRAPER fell to such a degree and now is a song and dance man on-stage.
All this dude needed was a good mgr to harness his ego and talents, restrain him to only superb band talent and songwriting and chain him into hard rock as opposed to all his all-over-the-place attempts at commercial success.

Roth is washed up. This guy is a classic case of serious has-been. He can't sing. He can't write ("Stay Frosty" blows) He moves on stage like a spastic monkey with Parkinson's. Not hating, I love VH and VH 1 though 1984 were all classics, really, really good. That was then, this is now. NO THANKS.

Roth really lost it after "A Lil' Ain't Enough", which is his last cool tune of the real Roth days. Strummin with the Devil was hideous.

I'm still waiting for the tour with him, Vince Neil and Stephen Pearcy to happen. At least that's what SP said he was working on back in 04 when I talked to him...

In that picture it looks like Roth is morphing into Neil Diamond. I think the lines on his forhead are named after guys. Did someone say Dave was a martial artist? I've been hearing that for years. The guy doesn't look like he has been in a fight all his life. Throwing kicks in the air is a lot different then fighting someone. The air does not hit back. So do the Rockets throw kicks. They way he has been performing on stage lately maybe he is a male rocket.

This guy is so full of himself. The only reason he is relevant is because of Van Halen.
