ALICE IN CHAINS Guitarist: New Album Is 'Completely Different From Anything We Ever Did' - Mar. 4, 2013
ALICE IN CHAINS has set a May release date for its new album, which is officially titled "The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here". The group's fifth studio effort is its second with William DuVall on vocals and follows up 2009's "Black Gives Way To Blue", the group's first all-new collection of material in 14 years and first since the 2002 death of original singer Layne Staley.

"We made a unique record that's completely different from anything we ever did," ALICE IN CHAINS guitarist Jerry Cantrell tells RollingStone.com. "It encapsulates a period of time, like all records do. You see growth and that the band is moving ahead in new territory that we haven't been to before, but we haven't lost our identity."

He added: "There's some real filth in there. That's intentional, and that's also just how we sound together. We're trying to make a record that we dig and we're trying to keep the bar high for ourselves and see if we can get past it, and I think that we did again. And of course you want people to dig it too and to respond to it, and to have that start happening is satisfying."

ALICE IN CHAINS released a first single called "Hollow" earlier this year from the new disc, along with an accompanying video.

"The initial response to 'Hollow' has been fucking incredible, totally not what we intended, and that's fucking awesome," Cantrell tells RollingStone.com. "We just put that song out there for the fans and then it ended up turning into a number one single, a six-minute sludgy metal tune. That's always fun, to see something like that happen."

ALICE IN CHAINS began working on new material in 2011, but the sessions for the album were delayed when Cantrell had to undergo shoulder surgery.

The band has announced a spring trek that starts on April 25 in Miami Beach and will include headlining slots at the Rocklahoma, Carolina Rebellion, Welcome To Rockville and Rock On The Range festivals.

Sorry Jerry, the reaction has not been "Fucking incredible" to hollow. Nobody I know is blown away by this. It sounds like something off of boggy depot or some throw away track. Very lack luster vocals. BUT! I will not judge the album from hearing one song. "Tattoo" the 1st single from the new Van Halen was bloody awful for the 1st single, the rest of the album killed it.

God Put the Whales over There? AIC are such a great band I expect them to come up with better album titles than this.

Black gives way to blue is a master piece AIC put out a few years back. Hoping this one will follow that path too.

Agree wholeheartedly.. While the track is not bad... I would certainly not file under "Completely Different" Sounds like what I would have expected from them.

I love AIC & Jerry, but Hollow isn't "completely diffferent" from what I expected. As a single, it's a little slow & plodding, but I will get my ass to Best Buy on release day & buy the cd bc I support everything this band does. Their music has been as much a part of my life as my own beating heart. R.I.P. Layne & Mike Starr. \m/

And complaining. Imagine that. They could go back into seclusion and not put out ANYTHING. Black Gives Way....was an awesome album. It's all in the songwriting. And after a few spins....Hollow's falls in to that category of great songwriting. If you don't like it ....then that's fine. But don't come on here and bellyache just because you don't have talent 1 and need to rip on someone. YOU KNOW WHO I'M TALKING TO.

Alice is awesome. Layne was a special frontman that unfortunately died prematurely. What a voice and stage presence. No matter how good the music quality, tough for me to embrace the AIC brand moniker. Similar to Black Sabbath 7th Star featuring Tony Iommi...call it something else...like Cantrell..and it will be purged of stigma and biais, all can appreciate the music with untainted ears. 7th Star is a brilliant 1st solo effort from Iommi. Unfortunately, the marketing created confusion and disdain. Same goes for all the single original member groups touring under names of past promise and glory.

what this band has been through, to be where they are at this moment. Losing 2 band members to drugs, it's quite an achievement. It shows that it wasn't just Layne Staleys voice, but also good song writing by Cantrell that made them successful. The new stuff is pretty damn good all things considered. It's not Dirt by no stretch of the imagination, but it's damn good.

Continued success to AIC.

I think the song "Hollow" kicks ass. If the rest of the album has the same kind of darkness in it, we are in for a KILLER AIC album!

The album that was completely different is Jar of Flies, a true masterpiece. That being said, I'm definitely a 1st day buyer of the new album, the previous one was incredibly good...

Agree with a lot of you guys,it's not completely different from what they have done in the past, but that's just fuckin fine with me. Im not a huge fan of Hollow though, it's not a bad listen but it's not wowing me. I felt the same way about Black gives way to blues first single though,I think it was "Check my brain?,and that ended up growing on me, the rest of that album was a masterpiece. In a world full of auto-tune bullshit,Im glad Alice are still around to provide us with some good old honest rock n roll.
