Four years removed from the eardrum-obliterating comeback that was "The Formation Of Damnation", TESTAMENT roars back with an album that shatters any notion that the band hit its final peak in 2008. Where "The Formation Of Damnation" was among the band's most crushingly heavy offerings, "Dark Roots Of Earth" carries a noticeably different vibe than its predecessor by leaning more towards their (now) classic American thrash roots.

Elements of "Practice What You Preach" and "Souls Of Black" can be heard all over "Dark Roots Of Earth", but this album is anything but a rehashing of former glories. The skilled interplay between Alex Skolnick and Eric Peterson, which features a wall-to-wall showcasing of intricate and harmonized runs, back-and-forth soloing, hooky riffs and metallic perfection, is at the centerpiece of this album. The duo displays everything that made them among the most formidable guitar teams on the late '80s / early '90s while placing everything into a modern context. The end result is a 2012 take on TESTAMENT's classic and pioneering sound. The years of dedication to their craft and perhaps a few spins of "The Gathering" (the razor-sharp edge of which slices right through the middle of this record) have allowed the guitarists to marry TESTAMENT's old and new with great success. Of course, the always brilliant drumming of Gene Hoglan, whose mere presence on an album improves its quality, drives this thrash fest right through the wall. No wait, he drives it over the wall. A bigger Greg Christian presence would have been appreciated by yours truly, but thanks to Andy Sneap's excellent production, his classic, punchy bass tone doesn't get lost in the fray.

Dialing back on the death growls that dominated "The Formation Of Damnation", Chuck Billy's vintage vocal approach brings the biggest dose of "old-school" flavor to this album. We're still treated to the occasional and appropriately placed roar, but the majority of "Dark Roots Of Earth" sees Billy delivering the kind of raspy, yet clean and intelligently and melodically phrased vocals that made him a standout vocalist back in the day. His performances on "Rise Up" and "Cold Embrace", a ballad in the vein of "The Legacy", show exactly why he's still among metal's best.

On that fateful day when the world comes to a cataclysmic end, those of us who consider ourselves TESTAMENT die-hards will probably die holding tightly to this album. Perhaps copies of "The Gathering" or "The Formation Of Damnation" will be snatched up a little quicker once the fire starts to fall from the sky, but, personally speaking, I would damn sure like to have songs like "True American Hate" and "Man Kills Mankind" blasting in my ears as I enter the great unknown.

ALBUM OF THE YEAR!! Best Testament album in awhile. Glad they brought back a ballad with 'Cold Embrace'. They write the best ballads... 'Return to Serenity', 'The Ballad', 'The Legacy', 'Trail of Tears', 'Musical Death (A Dirge)'. Come on! The title track is fuckin' badass it reminds me of The Ritual.

Yeah I feel the same way about the Testament ballads you mentioned and 'Cold Embrace' totally stacks up! Was so pumped to hear another classic Testament ballad! I love Chuck's singing on the album as well. He shows how you can still sing and be aggressive and melodic at the same time.

Awesome record, a lot different than TFOD which I found to be more thrashy. This record is more heavy metalish and reminds me a lot of The Ritual, which is one of my favorite albums of all time. Great release....

Excellent album. I'm really enjoying it, but then again, I liked "Low" so there you go.
Nice review, but I think Ryan may have been a little misinformed with things like, "The duo displays everything that made them among the most formidable guitar teams on the late '80s / early '90s while placing everything into a modern context." Not really--Eric played rhythm, Alex played the majority of the leads. I think Eric has gotten a lot better and probably plays more solos now, but older Testament was pretty much all Skolnick with the leads.
When someone says "formidable guitar team" in reference to older metal, I'm thinking Jason Becker & Marty Freidman.

This takes me back yet sounds fresh as anything. The musicianship is amazing, the songs are catchy yet impressive from a skill standpoint. Skolnick is amazing (when is he not), Peterson's riffing is so tight yet yet it retains a looseness that keeps things exciting (if that makes any sense), Christian has that awesome bell like tone, Hoglan kills it as always but what really blows me away is Chuck's voice. Classic. This is how to combine heavy/brutal with catchy and melodic. Not an ounce of false grandeur, cheesy bullshit or anything but honest from the heart emotion. 10/10.

was a disappoiniting album . With DROTE , Testament finally stoped trying to be the most aggressive, most brutal , whatever else thrash metal band and wrote some damn good songs for once . This sounds like a thrashier "Practice..." and way more inspired than anything Testament have released since their 3rd album .

and not without reason. as good as they were in their prime, they never released anything as jaw droppingly vital as Mastter Of Puppets, Reign In Blood, Peace Sells etc but i would take the last two Testament albums(damnation and dark roots) over anything released by the big four in almost 2 decades.

stellar work guys! 8/10

the studio production here is astounding. it actually "feels" like some of the earlier greats from Testament, but with an ear-pricking modern polish on the mixing desk. fucking superb.

I'm putting my money on this and graveyard's next album as being this year's best.

It's not The Gathering, (which is a 10) but what is?

This one is more melodic than past releases. But equally crushes.

On my 4th spin and many of the songs are already stuck in my head.

A very strong release by Testament...again.

Top 3 of 2012 thus far.

A great album. They didn't try to do Formation part 2 they did something a bit different. But at the end of the day it's classic sounding Testament. I personally like Formation of Damnation a bit more as it's a bit more in your face brutal, but Dark Roots of Earth is equally as good just in a more straight forward metal kind of way. Testament never disappoints. The only album of theirs in their almost 30 year career that I rarely listen to is Demonic.

Dark Roots of Earth is a SOLID 9/10. This is going to be up there with Six Feet Unders "Undead" and Soulflys "Enslaved" as my favorite release of 2012

They have failed to deliver an album that tops Formation of Damnation. Formation was so great in so many ways (Title track, Henchman Ride, Killing Season, The Persecuted Won't Forget, Eye For AN Eye, Evil Has Landed)...and when you look back at it 20 years from now, you will realize that the album has produced some of Testament's all time classics. DROE is very good, but very mid paced, they don't top the intensity of True American Hate anywhere on the album. The standouts here are Rise Up, the title track and True American Hate. Everything elseon here doesn't blow you away. Some of my buddies have already said OMG it blew me away from first listen. No. After releasing the Gathering and then Formation, there is no way this album willd o that for you. As for album of the year from a thrash band? Kreator still are kings...but DROE from me is a solid 7 out of 10

I agree with you. With a couple of listens to this album i can say I'm not really "blown away" by it. When i first heard Formation i was very impressed... Dark Roots really doesn't have alot of the thrashier songs like "Persecuted" or "Henchmen". This album might need to grow on me a bit. Alot of people here a blowing their loads all over the place giving it a 10. The Legacy and New Order are 10s... I'll give you a rating once i listen to it more...

Native Blood has got to be the most meaningful song they have written, it is fuckin awesome. Favorite song on this record is fucking Dark Roots of Earth, lots of catchy chorus's.

That fucking Powerslave cover was epic, I was just expecting Powerslave in lower tuning and chuck singing xD, but no, they did it Testament style. UP THE IRONS

"On that fateful day when the world comes to a cataclysmic end, those of us who consider ourselves TESTAMENT die-hards will probably die holding tightly to this album. Perhaps copies of "The Gathering" or "The Formation Of Damnation" will be snatched up a little quicker once the fire starts to fall from the sky" << that is so me on the last day of earth, I'll be blasting Fall of Sipledome through my Marshall stack.

What's with all these comparisons with Formation and/or the Gathering? "Testament die-hards will probably die holding tightly to this album" What the hell is that?
First off, this album kicks ass, no doubt. Great metal album and Testament deserves even more recognition than they've ever had. But can somebody tell me when they remember, back in 80 something, hearing The Legacy for the first time? Over the Wall, The Haunting, Burnt Offerings. How about hearing Eerie Inhabitants for the first time, off The New Order? These are the classics and these are the albums that I would always hold tightly.

I've been listening to Testament ever since The Legacy originally came out and I particularly love that album and The New Order too. Truly classic material. But I also do admit that they continued to get better as they went along and I still feel that The Gathering is their best album to date though the new once comes close to that.

I'm starting to admit to myself that for me at least, they will likely never beat The Gathering. I do like the vocal melodies Billy chucked in (lol oops). I just wish it was a little more dark and evil.

There is of course the possibility that I will fall in love with the album more and more on subsequent play.s I'm listening to dark roots right now and it's pretty fucking bad ass.

Dark Roots of Earth is a MUCH better album than Formation.

There is only 3 good/really STRONG songs on "Formation"
and that is:

More than meets the eye
The Persecuted Won't Forget
Hencman Ride

The rest on that album is good thrashmetal but nothing more.
So TFOD is like:

3 Very strong songs
8 fillers

Now we go to the new masterpiece called Dark roots of Earth.
The songs are MUCH STRONGER and original this time:

There is 7 VERY STRONG songs on "Dark roots"
and that is:

Rise Up
Native Blood
Dark Roots of Earch
True American Hate
Cold Embrace
Throne of Thorns
Last Stand for Independence

And ONLY two fillers:

A Day In The Death
Man Kills Mankind

So why is Dark Roots so much better than Formation?

I'll tell you again:

The songs are MUCH STRONGER this time.
MUCH STRONGER and more ORIGINAL.

Chuck sings like the old days.More clean voice and less cookiemonster shit.
Almost ALL riffs and solos are fucking KILLER this time!

FORMATION OF DAMNATION 6/10
DARK ROOTS OF EARTH 9/10

What you just read is a fact. It's true.

I almost agree with you, except More than meets the eye was crap. I preferred the title track. But the other two songs you mentioned are the only songs I really rate from FOD too.

I thought this was a pretty mediocre Testament album. It feels uninspired, mechanical and forced. The ballad is easily one of their weakest. To me, this album feels like their "Death Magnetic", a lot of nice riffs, solos and musicianship but some of the songs don't seem to flow well or bring out any excitement.

Liked Formation much better.

I cant see why6 so many people say The Ritual album is their worst. Testament dont need to play a million miles per hour on every song to write good music. The Ritual is a solid mid-paced melodic heavy metal record. The most disappointing album from this band is definately Demonic, way too uch deathmetal influence, and I am a huge deathmetal fan. But when testament goes overboard with the deathmetal sounds it doesnt sound good.

Testament have delivered another solid album. Great structure. Skolnick & Peterson amazing, Christian great to hear the baselines, Hoglan... I quote Stan Lee " 'Nuff said!" Billy brings it on the vox, it's awesome how he covers the full spectrum of what he's done on prior albums. Testament has served notice. It's too early for me to say if it's better than TFOD. It IS, however, better than any of the latest from the Big 4. Perhaps more important, they have not disappointed with anything they've put out. Hail the mighty Testament!!! Disciples of the watch.

One thing about Testament, they are by far the most consistent metal band of the genre out there. None of the "Big Four" have as solid of a catalog as Testament. Dark Roots is just another killer chapter in the career of a great band.

Better than Formation by a ways, Dark Roots goes back to the roots of Testament and delivers sonic blast after sonic blast of classic speed/thrash metal. Sometimes it sounds like The Legacy, sometimes Practice, sometimes Ritual, sometimes Demonic; Dark Roots seems to encompass elements of all the past albums into one epic onslaught.

The production on Dark Roots is nearly flawless. A super guitar driven album anchored on drums by one the best in the business. And Chuck Billy, what can you say about this guy that hasn't been said. If I had to pick a lead singer for a metal band, it would be Chuck Billy. The guy is a legend and he once again shows his range.

I'm not going to go through it track by track because honestly, it's all killer and you need to buy it and listen to it for yourself. Let's just say it's full of thundering guitar riffs, ripping solos, booming drums, and one Chuck Billy. Need I say more? You know Testament; you know they deliver on every album. Dark Roots is no exception.

I really dig that are elements that span the history of Testament on this record. Every track is worthy and the production is awesome. And I'm thinking that it beats the new Soulfly and new Kreator. Well yeh, it's fucking Testament!! 10/10

PS -- I don't know about your local record store but I got a Testament patch when I bought the CD. No autographed poster though... womp womp womp...

Good album, but seriously is not as good as the vibe on here is... I love Testament, they're one of my favorite bands but this isn't Rust in Peace or something. I'd put this on about th same level as TFOD. Having said that, the standout tracks on this album are really killer. Rise up, native blood, true American hate, and throne of thorns are balls to the wall, throw a kid off a stage bang your head songs. This is definitely one of the best releases this year. Comparing this album to all metal albums I've ever heard I'd probably give it a 6.5-7 which is a damn solid scores on my scale.

Come on, it has killer sound, a lot of mid-Testament groove (from The Ritual period), but there are better and weaker songs. If all songs were as killer as Native Blood and True American Hate (which really stand out), I'd say it's a 10/10, but come on, there are fillers. It's a good album nonetheless, it just didn't live up to the hype.

Formation was boring. I LOVED it back in 08, but I was still in the midst of hype. Two really killer songs (Persecuted and Henchmen) then the rest werer average. Title track, maybe a little better than average, but on the whole, pretty boring in hindsight...

Now TDROE, MUCH better, and I can tell straight away this album will still kick ass in four years. Much better album, I hope their next one, when it drops, is better than this. On the up \m/

Also... wasn't there a bonus track with LOG drummer drumming?

As much as I never thought I'd find myself saying it, Testament is a lesser band for losing Paul Bostaph. While his style of drumming never suited Slayer and justly came in for criticism from Slayer fans, his paired-back style propelled The Formation of Damnation to the very front of Testament's album catalogue. Sometimes a band needs to deliver a no-nonsense, balls-out brick to the face.

But Dark Roots of Earth is not that album. There is no instant, raw aggression here, and no particularly stand-out riffs. Bostaph has been replaced with Hoglan, and the driving power of Formation is thereby lost. I've always been a bit uncomfortable with him being called the Human Metronome, because he is like that and just doesn't have the swing that Testament needs. This band has always been a bit groovy and Hoglan can't manage it.

6/10

But I like this one even better! More variety great song writing and the inclusion of another classic Testament ballad in Cold Embrace is just epic! Chuck singing sounds great! This was probably my most anticipated album of the year and it has actually exceeded my expectations! For me it melds heaviness and melody together in perfect balance. Much respect Testament!

I have been a thrash fan since it's inception and have followed just about every "classic" thrash band from Metallica to Flotsam and Jetsam and even the European bands from Onlsaught to Sodom, and I have to say that after all these years Testament and been the most consistant (Ok, maybe not the most frequent) and solid of all the thrash bands over the years. Testament has released one classic release after another. This new album is another example on how truly great Testament are. What Testament understands is that thrash not only needs the "riff," but it also need a strong vocal presence.

This album is far from a 10/10. They can do WAY better IMHO.

I really want to love it because it's Testament, but something just isn't right about it.

For me, the worst part is the lyrics. Some of them are fucking straight out terrible...

"When I say rise up... You say war.
Rise up... War!
Rise up... War!"

If that's 10/10 then standards are fucking slipping.
That being said, some of Chuck's vocals are amazing! Listening to Hetfield or Mustaine et al. can be painful these days, but Billy manages to pull off some full on Practice What You Preach vocals. Pretty fucking impressive! And I'm actually loving Cold Embrace.

It definitely isn't a bad album, but I think people are going over board on it being mindblowing.

Still one of the best thrash bands ever though. Bloodstock next week! \m/

i have to say that this is a huge metal album, a real classic . If this was released in the eighties it would be considered a classic . This goes way beyond than just a great Testamnet album , there are moments that have a majesty straight from some of Iron Maiden's best for example . The ballad "Cold embrace" is of "Children odf the damned"/Fade to black quality for example and there are heavy metal song like "throne of thornes" and "The dark roots..." that are majestic .

I can't believe that Testament had an album like this in them . If we take away their first 2 classic thrash albums this is the best they've ever done , but it's different more of monster metal album in the vein of "master of puppets" rather than just another good testament album .
10/10 album of the year and i am not even a diehard testament fan, in fact i haven't liked an album of theirs since the ritual .

In the old days when listening to an album you could hear if it was a Testament/Megadeth etc.. album, they all had a different vibe. Nowadays they all sound the same to me, therefore I find this album disappointing.
But I think I have to blame the music indusrty for that, not Testament.

Love this new album from Testament. Like many of you, I feel they should be part of the Big Five! This is their third great record in a row. It's good to know that the old school thrash bands can still kick it. The last few CDs from Testament, Exodus, Kreator and Death Angel have been brilliant returns to form. Even the latest releases from the Big Four have been pretty good considering past dips in output quality too (especially Anthrax's most recent and the last three Megadeth offerings, despite the fact Dave is turning into a right-wing nut).

I'm really liking this new album. My second favorite this year, right after the new Kreator. I think the reviewer nailed it with the 8.5 rating. It's significantly better then Formation, which was really good, but everything was so mid tempo. Nothing wrong with mid tempo, but you have to change it up a bit. Still not as great as The Gathering, which I know the old school fans are going to give me shit for, but is my favorite Testament. To me it's the first album that not only was amazing, but just sounded like something no one else had done before. All there old stuff you could say, this is amazing but it sounds like ___(insert more innovative band) Still Testament is showing no signs of losing it, which is impressive in itself at this point in their career.

I agree with what some others have said, the lyrics are really bad on this album. FOD was leaps ahead of this in lyrics - what happend? Its all USA! And that odd nu metal hokey cokey crap that some bands do. Cringy shite that. Disapointed - I wanted to love this album.

The guitars and bass are probably pretty great if you can get past the lyrics. But I wont be listening to this like I did with FOD (which is right up there with puppets IMHO).

Also (and I could live with this if not for the lyrics) the Drums don't phrase the riffs like on the last album, I miss Paul. GH's drumming sounds really solid but isn't cutting any ground and ultimately bores. He was far from the best Death drummer - I don't understand why people rate his work. That Fear Factory album drumming was poor too. Where as all of the albums that Pauls has worked on stand out as amazing on repeated listens. Divine Intervention is a thrash album of beauty
- this is not.

Please spend somt time on your lyrics next time or that will be the last Testament album I get.

5/10

I wouldnt even call this a thrash album, but it is Testament after all and they couldn't release a bad album if they tried.

I am not very impressed with this album. It isn't awful by any means but 'American Hate' seems to be the only stand out song. Formation wasn't that great either but at least that one had more memorable songs. This album ranks a little better than Demonic and nowhere near as good as anything made from '87 to '94 or The Gathering. I have been and always will be a diehard Testament fan ever since I first heard my brother's 'The New Order' cassette tape back in 1988 but this album, as well as Formation and Demonic, will not see much play in my CD/MP3 player.

Thumb me down, I couldn't give a fuck. This page is obviously overflowing with fanboys. if you believe this is their best work you are a deluded fanboy fool.

Back in the day, I had "Practice What You Preach" and "Souls of Black" in heavy rotation. I didn't hear their 2008 effort, but when I heard the singles from this one, I knew I was a first day buyer. This album is STRONG and I have a bit of catching up to do on previous albums.

Great album, nice to see thrash still alive and kicking. The Powerslave cover is fantastic.

I saw Testament in a small club after the 2008 album came out and it was one of the best thrash shows I've ever seen. This album is superb and leaves all the other "thrash" bands out there (both young and old) in the dust and six feet underground.

I'm not gonna get nerdy on this one and write my own review. Simply put...if you like Testament you're gonna LOVE this album. If you're a fan of old school thrash metal...you're gonna love this album! \m/

Only Native Blood and True American Hate. All other tracks are so boring that I force myself to listen in jump through mode. Dark Roots Of Earth is a disappointing album of the year!

Listen only ones and definitely not gonna do that anymore! 2/10

9/10 Sounds very fresh which is hard to achieve in this genre. Chuck's vocals are better than ever!

I hate to say this being a long-time Testament fan, but this album definitely did not live up to the hype. Title track sucks, ballad sucks, and everything else is just decent. Kreator blew them out of the water with "Phantom Antichrist"

So far, after one listen, this may be the best new thrash metal album of the last 5 years - better than Anthrax "Worship Music" and right up there with Megadeth "13" - which were both good albums.

I thought it might grow on me, but i feel the same as when i first heard it. I'm not really blown away by it. It's pretty average. Not to say it's a bad album, it's just i was anticipating it to be alot better... It's not nearly as thrashy or aggressive as "Formation". Which is what i expect from Testament. Rise Up, True American Hate, Throne Of Thorns are my favorite tracks... I'll give it a 7

Probably album of the year thus far. I give it a 9, and reserve the right to increase my ranking upon repeated listens. For reference, I would give Formation of Damnation a 9.5.

And, it is as kickass as most people on here are saying. "Throne of Thorns" and "Man Kills Mankind" are as good as anything they've ever written IMHO.

Plus, on the deluxe disc, the covers kick ass. Especially "Animal Magnetism". Got this CD/DVD for 8.99 yesterday and it is definitely worth paying more than that for is.

What a great year for some epic fucking metal albums.

Throne of Thorns was one of those "ear catchers" on my first listen. Great album overall, right on par with Formation.

I can still say it kicks major ass! MUCH more memorable than TFOD. Chuck's vocals are at its peak!

Maybe not AS GOOD as Formation but it's a good follow up to the album I liked Rise Up,Native Blood,True American Hate,Throne of THorns and the Queen Cover of Dragon Attack the most. As I said earlier it's not AS GOOD as Formation but maybe because Chuck didn't have the demon growl as much in this IDK why but his voice(To me) sounded closer to his voice in The new Order and Practice but that's me.

the one problem with this album is the blast-beat drums. These sound so out of place on a Testament album. Blast beats belong with napalm death grind bands, not 80s thrash. Other than that the album rules. Testament never disappoints. The covers are excellent, very well done. But the 'Formation' album was a little better though
