It's been 17 years since a little side project amongst New Orleans-based metal buddies defied the odds and became a genre phenomenon. There have been countless metal, sludge and doom acts serving electric alms to BLACK SABBATH, going as far back as PENTAGRAM, WITCHFINDER GENERAL, SAINT VITUS, CANDLEMASS and CATHEDRAL. Not a lick of them have penetrated the masses like DOWN has except for maybe WOLFMOTHER, even if the latter has much more going on than just a doom and sludge base.

Phil Anselmo at the helm of DOWN has lent the band a certain high profile. Until last year, the same could be said of Anselmo's PANTERA bandmate, Rex Brown. The insider notoriety of Kirk Windstein from CROWBAR, Pepper Keenan from C.O.C. and Jimmy Bower (CROWBAR, EYEHATEGOD) helps keep the underground hero purity of DOWN's "supergroup" status. Yet nobody could've foreseen the greatness of DOWN's 1995 debut, "NOLA", considering it was fundamentally a tool-around project.

Close to two decades later with only three studio albums and a live anthology to their credit, the Big Easy dirge collective gets together for another jaunt down their well-blazed SABBATH, ZEPPELIN and SKYNYRD trails. This time, Rex Brown is replaced by CROWBAR/GOATWHORE bassist Patrick Bruders and DOWN issues their fans a half hour dropkick of no-frills, sludge-o-matic rawk, the first in a reported series of EPs.

If you have the first three DOWN albums, there'll be no surprises what you're getting here, outside of Phil Anselmo's pinpointed evolution from ralpher to full-on singer. Sure, he's let his cleans sail incrementally in DOWN, SUPERJOINT RITUAL and PANTERA (to succinct sublimation on PANTERA's "Cemetery Gates"), but face the facts; Anselmo's made his bread and butter as one of the fiercest, most recognizable growlers in metal history. On "Down IV: The Purple EP", Anselmo settles into a laidback Southern sprawl on all six songs, resisting temptation to rip one off, even if he cuts loose on the final stretch of "Misfortune Teller". He spits more than he bellows on the climaxes of "The Curse Is a Lie", "Witchtripper" and "Open Coffins". You have to admire Anselmo's discipline to step up his game and drop his chops with more confidence.

The majority of the time on this EP, he's coaxing something far more relaxed and symbiotic to the Iommi-esque trip hammers that Kirk Windstein and Pepper Keenan lay before him. It's hardly Osbourne-esque, but Anselmo's Americanized impression of SABBATH-era Ozzy is undeniable and more than welcome. "This Work Is Timeless" might be the mission statement of what Anselmo and his DOWN cohorts have sought to accomplish together even just for fun, and it explains why metal bands pay tribute to BLACK SABBATH ad infinitum. It's an unwritten creed to do so.

As ever, Keenan and Windstein are like syncopated buzzing bees, while Jimmy Bower pummels his primary lines and rolls like he's surrendered himself to an unseen mojo prevailing over his forearms. He's particularly meaty on "Misfortune Teller", "Levitation" and "Witchtripper". Patrick Bruders settles into the band with ease and no one's likely to cry foul over Rex Brown's departure, not when DOWN sounds as resolved as ever to their consecrated amp worship.

The low riding vibe of "Down IV: The Purple EP" is as reverential as its subdued artwork. The Grim Reaper slinks off-panel into the midst of an ambient combat between gloom and effervescence, much like "Levitation" slinks and slithers into this EP with incremental volume. A perfect, menacing lead sequence budding into a spectacular twin guitar attack, all as DOWN fans have come to expect. There's nothing more extravagant to "Down IV: The Purple EP" than that minus some chewy acid rock solos and a hefty outing by Phil Anselmo on the mike. Anselmo has stated the band avoided slicking up the EP and no doubt DOWN's listeners will rejoice. Simplicity works to fortune here and DOWN supporters will be both satiated and stoked for the next installment.

It sounds similar to "NOLA" but it's not. It's definately simpler than the previous ones, but i guess they did that on purpose.I would also like it to have one more song or a cover maybe because we were waiting five years for this. "Misfortune teller" is a monster!! Definately a classic in their setlist already!!! And as usual quite interesting lyrics. Let's just hope that they'll keep their word and release the next one at the end of this year and not later because if we wait a couple of years for another e.p. ....

This CD is 5.0 at best I tried to like it by fooling myself, but if you do that, then it was never good anyay. The riffs are OK, but nothing new and groundbreaking. Mumbles Mcgee can't sing and sounds tone deaf and they lyrics are a joke. It sounds like alot of patch work on this and they phoned it in. Hope the other 3 EP's are better. The production is better then II, but nothing like the magic NOLA had.

record kicks ass. Sabbathy, oldschool and riffy as a motherfucker; I think it's a very enjoyable listen and can't wait for the remaining three AND Phil's solo record - big time. The rest of you haters can suck it.

The record's good and i like it but it think that Phil sounds like he's trying too hard to follow and his vocals are a bit of a disappointment imo. Anyway, still a nice record.

Finally, Blabbermouth gives a great band and a great record some credit! Saw them live a few weeks ago and Witchtripper and Misfortune Teller sounded fucking unbelievable! Love it how Phil is still so into it on stage after all these years. GIVE US THE NEXT EP FAST, YA FUCKERS!

A great EP, front to back. My only complaint is that "The Curse is a Lie" and "This Work is Timeless" just aren't as strong of tracks as the rest of the album, but still, they are great songs nonetheless. Give this album a solid 9.5; highly recommend this album for anyone who loves old doom.

This is what black sabbath should have done to follow-up sabotage. Witchtripper and Misfortune Teller will most likely never leave their setlist, and that is no small feat considering how strong their first three albums were/are. That said, my personal favorite is the curse is a lie. And unlike most who seem to love this song, i DON'T smoke weed. I do find myself spinning the new Witchcraft more than this, however...

I don't see it happening.

That was almost 20 years ago, and you're talking about a band that has worked together only sporadically since then.

NOLA is pure magic...really a once in a career occurrence. That doesn't mean they can't put out quality music any more...they surely are, but the odds of them ever hitting it out of the park like they did on their debut are slim to none.

Yeah, I know. I try not to dwell on a band's past efforts while listening to the latest offering, but in this case it's hard not to. Like I said, it's decent; enough so that I'll be checking out II.

I agree that NOLA was a once off, never to be repeated album.

This ep is a tip of the hat to the past, without replicating what they did 17yrs ago.

Great listen - looking forward to the next ep.

I think with this record DOWN have brought the whole "rock star" agenda to ground level. They know that fans want a good deal, hence 4 EP's over 4 years, separated by relentless touring along with reasonable CD and ticket prices (Manchester this Friday - £17.50, a frikkin' steal). Sounds good to me.

When I bought this CD I felt like I was supporting a local metal band, instead of sponsoring a product. It feels good.

I loved Down, I loved Pantera, I like Super joint. This album would be a 5 at best if it did not have the name Down on the cover. It just is not memorable in anyway shape or form.

It is not terrible just another cd that will not be played much in the future

Down is a very solid band and I enjoy most of the songs that they release including this EP. Levitation is a great opener and Misfortune teller is a great closer. Open Coffins and This work is timeless are kind of a let down though. Can't wait for a new Crowbar release and hope Phil releases something extreme and visceral. Its been way too long since we have heard a pissed off Phil. I guess that's a good thing for him though.

I'm a huge DOWN fan, seen them more times than I could count on one hand.. Don't get me wrong, I dig the album.. but there is NOTHING on this album that I'm going to remember or recommend to somebody to listen to if I wanted them to HEAR DOWN.. The only song that really stuck out with me is THE CURSE IS A LIE, just coz it's a deep sounding song.. But this EP better just be the flash of the blade, I still got high hopes.. but I can't say these songs are repeating in my cd player.

crusty and old on purpose, which is fine. It's definitively got that analog lo-fi going on. Songs are ok, not in the NOLA caliber, but pretty good. Is it me or Phil starting to sound like he just doesn't have that...spark?

Give it a 7 for merely having that heavy as fuck crust that metal needs. Songwriting suffers just a bit though.

As for Pepper needing to be back in CoC again, just listen to In the Arms of God and YOU tell me they aren't a better band with him in it.

7.
