Double albums. In order to justify their being, they'd best be damned special. Otherwise, they're to be held in contempt as cash cow fodder. There are only so many double albums out there worth their salt and if BARONESS turned a few heads last year with "Yellow and Green", this year, SOILWORK just might've one-upped them on their new double shot, "The Living Infinite".

In every sense, this extensive, often splintering metal extravaganza sounds like it's going for broke. SOILWORK, once again minus Peter Wichers, unleashes a massive monster destined to rank as one of their biggest triumphs. Flying through a deuce set primarily on ignition, "The Living Infinite" sends SOILWORK fans a fierce, proud and masterful two-fister.

As fast as this album operates, when SOILWORK intercuts the near-relentless speed of "The Living Infinite" with straightforward and melodic numbers like "The Windswept Mercy", "Antidotes in Passing" and "Whispers and Lights", there's still a dense and powerful projection behind the conjugality between grandeur and aggression. Pretty as "Whispers and Lights" chimes for nearly two-thirds of its course, expect a couple of brackish blast beat sequences and wracking death throes to unhinge the song's delicate flow. Then "Rise Above the Sentiment" pushes the envelope with a devilishly infectious collision between hope-inspiring harmony and magma-filled landslides of torment.

Elaborated with chamber fugue and piano measures on the intro to the screechy fast "Spectrum of Eternity", the name of SOILWORK's game on this album is to deliver more subversive and top layer intricacies than ever before. There's overt beauty amidst the gusting brutality of "Spectrum of Eternity", "This Momentary Bliss", "Leech", "Tongue", "Long Live the Misanthrope" and "Let the First Wave Rise". Huffed with storm-batten chord progressions ("Realm of the Wasted" is incredible with its tunefully arranged note swarms) and maintaining more concentrated thrust than a porn lord, "The Living Infinite" throttles like SOILWORK's very careers depended on it.

Bjorn "Speed" Strid hits the pinnacle of his vocal talents with a captivating blend of unhinged wailing and crooning that strikes the median between alpha and borderline omega. Always on top of his game, this is the most comfortable he's ever sounded with all of his ranges. He even peels off a punishing caterwaul at the end of "Let the First Wave Rise". New guitarist David Andersson takes over for Peter Wichers alongside Sylvain Coudret and their synchronicity is instantaneous. Their Bachian tag solo on "Long Live the Misanthrope", for instance, is gorgeous. Whether or not the departure of Wichers was a necessary evil, the entire troupe of SOILWORK obviously seized fifth gear with all six pairs of fists clenched in unison on the shift.

SOILWORK consistently tricks their listeners with varying modes of thrash, grind, power rock, metalcore (the decent elements, that is) and occasional dunks into the death metal cauldron to achieve a rare result of consistently engaging music spread over so long a course. "The Living Infinite" wastes no opportunities to entertain and to rattle SOILWORK's audience nearly senseless with superlative songwriting that should make metalheads of every generation proud.

Sharply written and hummable tracks like "Drowning With Silence" and the fabulous instrumental "Loyal Shadow" that appear later in the second disc logically could've been placed at the beginning of the first one, and yet they serve their placement best by retaining the album's momentum. "Antidotes in Passing" slows the mayhem down just enough with improbable pseudo pop that becomes more of an addiction than a remedy. Its tricky dynamic keeps the album interesting and flavorful, knowing that the next track, "Leech" is going to stoke the album back on hyperspeed through the restless triplicates and crushing rolls of Dirk Verbeuren.

Having driven as smart a course as anyone could through the first decade of the new millennium, SOILWORK brings all of their guns, new and old, into 2013, and pull off a ballsy stunt. "The Living Infinite" is more than a happening for metal this year. It's a freaking event.

Was completely blown away by this album, Peter Wichers will be missed but once you spin these two discs a few times you barely notice he's gone. Living Infinite I & II deserve a special mention.

Sublime effort.

Half killer, half filler record. The absence of Peter Wichers songwriting talent and skills affects in this one pretty much. Still, it's a worthy purchase for a fans of good quality metal.

Definitely their best album to date. I've been listening to this album pretty much nonstop for the past week. Very few new albums are able to hold my exclusive interest for as long as this one. I'm still kind of wrapping my head around the entire album, but once I do i'm pretty sure this will take a place in my top 10 or 5 albums ever.

If I had to find a flaw with this album it's that the solos aren't quite as amazing as on their previous albums. The songwriting quality has greatly improved; 9 albums in and Soilwork is still able to keep things exciting by successfully combining their older "chaotic" style, their newer "mainstream" style, and even adding a lot of cool new experimental elements. I can't wait to see these songs live. 10/10

Also, Speed's screams and cleans sound better than ever. If you thought his astronomical range couldn't get any wider, listen to the chorus on Parasite Blues.

My fave tracks right now have to be This Momentary Bliss, TLI1, Parasite Blues, and Long Live The Misanthrope, although I don't think any of the 20 tracks are weak.

to this on Spotify as I type.

This band has definitely got their shit together, and display it proudly and on 2 discs.

Remarkable sense of melody and knowing when to lay down the hammer. Production is crisp and clean. Soilwork have that sense of sounding organic without sounding prepackaged, if that makes any sense.

Definate top 10 of the year..so far. I'm only on side 1.

You can hear the hard work and attention to precision on this. Pure quality.

9...and climbing.

Some of the best music i've heard in years. They really upped the ante on this one and the result is an epic masterpiece. Every metal fan should go out and get this. There are 20 songs and 80+ minutes to absorb so give it a chance to sink in.

Up there with STD and NBC when it comes to quality.
And double as much in quantity.

Huge surprise there, no one expected a comeback of that sort.
CD is a tad more experimental, and does not have quite as much hits, but still very interesting.

Faves:

Spectrum Of Eternity
This Momentary Bliss
Tongue (incredible)
The Living Infinite I an II
Vesta
The Windswept Mercy (fantastic)
Whispers And Lights
Drowning With Silence
Antidotes In Passing
Rise Above The Sentiment
Parasite Blues (Love it)

I love all 20 tracks. There is enough variety in the album that it is all I've had in my car for the past 2 weeks. Strid is on fire, his best work in my opinion. It's amazing that you can have so many catchy vocal melodies on an album without it feeling "samey" I'm stoked that the band produced this effort when everybody thought they would die after Wichers' exit. Can't wait for their AUS tour in OCT.

My God, this album is fucking phenomenal in every sense of the word. I've been listening to it nonstop since last week and I just can't get enough. Never expected it to be this good, not without Wichers, but they pulled out all of the stops for this one. I'd go so far as to say this is their best work. The only track I don't really care for is Owls Predict, Oracles Stand Guard. It's a weird tune and a poor choice for an album closer. Everything else is perfection.

Tongue, Parasite Blues, Rise Above the Sentiment, The Windswept Mercy, and Vesta are my stand-outs.

I stopped listening to this band 10 years ago after losing interest after FN5, but I thought I'd check this one out after all the rave reviews, this album is quite simply brilliant! I thought they would never even come close to topping Chainheart Machine, but I think this has it beat.

This album has it all, great songwriting, fantastic musicianship, thrash, melody, blast beats, you name it, it has it and delivered with precision. Brilliant album that I will be listening to time and time again.

9/10

I had high hopes and i had my doubts about this double album. Initially i thought double disc it will be two discs worth of tracks and it will be an album's worth of good tracks. Then i gave it multiple spins and keep finding more and more little details in their song writing. Man i was wrong with it being a fail on their part. I have been listening to this cd everyday since it's release and can't stop.

I am so glad Bjorn contributed way more musically to the band as he has done before in their earlier work. Vocally he has pushed the boundaries and sounds more confident than ever!! The production is top notch on this double disc Jens Bogren destorys Andy Sneap's snappy and thin mix!!

My only complaint is i wish there was more leads and trade off's which they are known for.

I gave it a 9

Because, once again, you can tell how uninformed Ray Van Horn Jr. is.

You DON"T HAVE TO mention Soilwork's old work in a review of this album. But, when it is a comeback as big and triumphant as this one...I mean, it's been eleven years since they released an album that people went nuts over like this...they've released FOUR BORING RECORDS in a row...and now they are back in a BIG way....

...and RVHjr doesn't mention a SINGLE old album? Why is this? Because, he knows nothing about the music reviews. He is BM's attempt at a Pitchfork-styled snob reviewer.

how can a double album be cash cow fodder? They cost a lot more to make (unless it's a band that poops out songs and usually dismisses half of them), but usually only cost just a little bit more than a normal cd.

All in all, they bring in less than two separate albums.

actually loved previous Soilwork releases STAGD and TPB- EQUALLY. Wichers was great but does not make or break this great band.

TLI builds upon everything they have released to date all the while incorporating more variety, complexity and experimentation that helped originally propel the band to the very top tier of Melodic Heavy Metal.

Technically the best album they have put out to date. Production is top notch. Mix is wonderfully pleasant to the ear drums. Every member of the band's performance is top notch. Björn "Speed" Strid is among the best all-around vocalists in the genre today, coming full circle with a vocal range he has not only maintained but improved upon since the days of NBC. All the while, Dirk Verbeuren plays with outstanding character all to his own in a seemingly massive array of technical drummers attempting to standout in heavy metal today.

Fantastic Effort Gentleman!

9.5/10

Definitely better than STD and STAGD, even better than TPB, so yes this is a return to form.

I'll miss both Frenning and Wichers, but they wrote their best stuff on the first four albums and it seems like Strid + Andersson + Coudret makes that particular "fuck yeah" element in Soilwork come back, so I'm looking forward to their next album already!

Also - as important as the rejuvenated real Soilwork sound - this album has consistent strength in songwriting, something the previous three albums didn't have, though they had some great songs, one album more (Stabbing & Panic) than the other (Sworn).

Been a fan since SBS, CHM is arguably my favourite melo-death album of all time, APP/NBC/FNF/STD are all excellent albums and examples of how Soilwork continued to change their sound (slightly) from album to album while retaining their signature "Soilwork sound"......STGD was a step backwards and uninspired....TPB had some solid songs, but overall was rather mediocre.
Now that's out of the way, I'm very, very impressed with The Living Infinite......has some of Soilwork's best thrashier songs in over a decade (ie. Spectrum of Eternity, Momentary Bliss, Tongue, Realm of the Wasted, Leech), while they continue to expand and write songs that are instant melo-death candy (ie. Long Live the Misanthrope, Vesta, Living Infinite 1&2).
Will always love the work Wichers & Frenning did on the earlier albums, but another reviewer nailed it on the head - the combo of Strid/Andersson/Coudret as songwriters really has chemistry.
9/10 easily, and obvious contender for album of the year.
