ANDREW W.K.: 'Music Can Be A Way Of Conveying Emotions And Ideas Without Language'
January 20, 2007The latest issue of the weekly New York paper New York Press contains an article about Andrew W.K. and his upcoming appearance at the High Voltage dance party — happening Wednesday, January 24 at 11:00 p.m. at the Sutra nightclub in New York City. The interview touches on Andrew's overall perception of the world and the world's overall perception of Andrew:
"There's no word other than joy that I could use to describe what I was going through when making [the first three ANDREW W.K.] albums," he is quoted as saying in the article. "I didn't like that word at first because it was too exposing. I was thinking of a more physical sensation that couldn't be described, which is why the music needs to exist at all — so that it can stimulate a reaction equitable with that feeling. As a people, we've become dependent on words as a means to express ideas, and music can be a way of conveying emotions and ideas without language. That concept didn’t resonate with me until I was able to communicate with people who I otherwise wouldn’t be able to communicate with through music."
