QUEENSRYCHE vocalist Geoff Tate performed his debut solo gig last night (June 1st) at The Catwalk in Seattle, Washington, and by all accounts, it was a memorable show in front of a near-capacity crowd. According to eyewitnesses, the band's sound bears quite a few similarities to the singer's main group, but the new project—which is presently just named GEOFF TATE—has an identity of its own. Evidently, several QUEENSRYCHE tracks were aired as well, including opener 'Gonna Get Close To You', 'Spool', 'Hero', 'Someone Else?', 'Della Brown', and a 'more upbeat' version of 'The Thin Line'. More information as it becomes available.

Chicago's SOIL, who feature in their ranks former BROKEN HOPE/SINDROME bassist Shaun Glass on guitar, have begun tracking their J Records debut with producer Johnny K at his Groovemaster Studios. No album title has decided upon yet, but songs that are set to appear on the CD include 'Breaking Me Down', 'My Own', 'Inside Out', 'Need To Feel', and potential first single 'Halo', a demo version of which has apparently 'begun its own life on Active Rock stations in Orlando, Madison, Phoenix, Tampa and Sacramento,' according to Glass.

SKID ROW were forced to postpone the first four dates of their previously-announced US tour due to unspecified 'scheduling issues'. The affected gigs include shows in Mt. Clemens, Flint and Valparaiso. New dates will be announced shortly.

Former SKID ROW vocalist Sebastian Bach will be appearing on the Sally Jessy RaphaelShow on June 15th. The show's topic will be 'Celebrity Dads Father's Day Special', and boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard will also appear, among others. It tapes this Tuesday, June 5th at 12 noon in Manhattan. For tickets and more information, call 212-244-3595.

A message from ARMORED SAINT (featuring ANTHRAX vocalist John Bush):

...

'Hello again, fellow metalheads. As usual, we apologize for the delay in getting you updated information. But we now have some new stuff to share with you, so here it goes:

...

'We have completed a new two-disc set of material from our collective archives. Nod to the Old School is a collection of songs from the present and the past, which we feel represents the entire history of the band. The two-disc set contains live tracks, cover tunes, our original three-song EP, four-track demos with Dave Prichard, an acoustic version of 'Tainted Past', CD-ROM live videos and two brand new songs. Nod to the Old School is being released on June 11 in Europe and July 24 in the US on Metal Blade Records.

...

'You'll want to check out the photos in the booklet also, which include live pics from our recent tours, our Jr. High school portraits, liner notes by rock journalist Jon Sutherland and of course some old school pics from the past.

...

'The American and European versions of disc 2 are slightly different containing a few different songs and CD-ROM files from one another.

...

'On Friday, June 29, 2001, the SAINT will be performing at the Bang Your Head Festival in Germany. We were originally supposed to play at last years BYH Festival but had to cancel due to John's obligation to ANTHRAX and last summer's MOTLEY CRUE tour. So, we are making up for it this year by attending with lots of Crown Royal in tow. JUDAS PRIEST are headlining and SAVATAGE are also on the bill.

...

'We want to thank those of you who came out to support us on the last DIO tour. We had a blast touring with Ronnie and his crew and also the LYNCH MOB boys were much fun to hang out with. We wish we could of played longer for you guys but that's how it goes when you're on an opening slot. We apologize for the few shows that had us booked as playing second and as a result some of you missed us. It was the fault of the promoters and we never would find out about it until it was too late. Not our faults! Also, Joey wants to thank all of you who came out to see him on the SAVATAGE/FATES WARNING TOUR.

...

'At the moment, we're not too sure if SAINT will do any touring for this new CD as John will be beginning writing a new ANTHRAX record with the guys and Joey will be working on a new ENGINE record with Ray Alder from FATES. But you never know, if there is something that comes up, we'll be in touch!

...

'Until next time, get ready for the Old School collection Nod to the Old School coming out June 11 in Europe and July 24 in the USA! SEE YA!'

Germany's GRAVE DIGGER have signed a new deal with Nuclear Blast Records. The group's already-completed new album, entitled The Grave Digger, will be released in the fall.

For immediate release:

...

PITTSBURGH, Penn. - An online auction is currently being held to raise money for Chuck Schuldiner, founder and leader of the seminal Florida death metal band DEATH, who was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor two years ago.

...

Schuldiner, 33, was diagnosed on his 31st birthday after experiencing headaches and unusual symptoms while in the studio working on an album for his current full-time band, CONTROL DENIED. With the generous help of family, friends, and organizations such as MusiCares, Schuldiner was able to moderately control the cancer with various treatments and previous operations. In recent weeks, Schuldiner's condition has worsened. Both live and necrotic cancer tissue has built up in his brain and has started to infiltrate the cerebellum, causing Schuldiner's health to decline rapidly.

...

Schuldiner is presently at Cedar Sinai Comprehensive Care Center awaiting word from doctors to begin a fairly new and still relatively experimental drug called Vincristine (VCR). Vincristine belongs to a class of naturally occurring chemotherapy agents, which are extracted from the periwinkle plant and, unlike many chemotherapy drugs, bears practically no toxic side effects. Should this course of action be approved, treatment will begin immediately. At this time Schuldiner's surgical team in New York City feels that surgery is not an option.

...

Schuldiner is rightfully considered the forefather of the death metal genre and a major innovator within heavy metal overall. DEATH formed in 1983 when Schuldiner was a teenager and has released seven albums worldwide. The band's early albums, including Scream Bloody Gore and Leprosy, are cited by many as being the most influential albums in death metal. Schuldiner's later work took on a more technical approach, cementing DEATH's status not only as one of the most brutal, but also as one of the most technically proficient bands in metal history. After retiring DEATH in 1999, Schuldiner began concentrating 100 percent of his creativity on CONTROL DENIED, which he feels strongly is an extension, or natural maturation, of what DEATH has been for over a decade. He had, in fact, been working on the new CONTROL DENIED album, When Machine and Man Collide, when he was taken aback by this illness once again.

...

In addition to the benefit auction, upon hearing about Schuldiner's situation from bassist Steve DiGiorgio (whose resume includes DEATH, CONTROL DENIED and TESTAMENT),TESTAMENT vocalist Chuck Billy, who has also recently been diagnosed with cancer, volunteered to share the proceeds of a planned mid-August benefit concert in his honor with Schuldiner.

...

'Obviously, this act of selfless consideration has touched us immensely,' said Schuldiner's mother, Jane. 'Words really can't express the gratitude we feel toward Chuck Billy and his family for doing such an amazing thing for someone else in need when he, himself, is going through such a hard time, as well. He must be an amazing young man.'

...

The online auction features an assortment of rare music memorabilia kindly donated by the music and metal communities, and also includes one of Schuldiner's own guitars and a bass autographed by Steve DiGiorgio, as well as rare items from rock 'n' roll's more mainstream artists such as GODSMACK, STAIND, DISTURBED, and the RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS. The auction, hosted through eBay and allbeat.com, may be accessed through Hammerheart America's website (www.hammerheartamerica.com) by following links to the Charles Schuldiner Medical Fund Benefit. Donations to the fund are also accepted and may be wired, transmitted via PayPal, or mailed in care of Hammerheart Records. Former IRON MAIDEN vocalist Paul Di'Anno is currently writing material for a new KILLERS CD with guitarist Cliff Evans, and the duo hope to begin recording the new album shortly. If all goes according to plan, the upcoming CD will coincide with the release of a home video, featuring material from the recent KILLERS dates in Scandinavia and some earlier gig footage as well.

KORN frontman Jonathan Davis and renowned filmmaker and artist Clive Barker (Hellraiser) have joined forces with composer Richard Gibbs to create a unique interactive DVD, set for release on Sony later this year.

The disc will feature 12 original paintings by Barker with musical compositions by Davis and Gibbs. The music will be mixed in 5.1 Surround Sound in order to create a full three-dimensional experience that will redefine that way the world looks at art.

...

Davis notes: 'We've set out to create a new medium unlike any other, combining the elements of art, beauty, music and horror with state-of-the-art technology—a post-millennium coffee table book for your DVD player.' Barker elaborates: 'This is a ground-breaking project unifying state of the art music with paintings pulled from the depths of my unconscious.' Meanwhile, Gibbs says: 'Jon [Davis] is definitely the most musically twisted brain I have ever worked with. And now for us to collaborate with a multi-demented soul like the one and only Clive Barker...I don't know what's going to happen, but I hope the authorities have been alerted.'

...

This interactive work will transform a television or computer into a new artistic medium. Each Barker image will be displayed while Davis and Gibbs' music leads the viewer on a journey through the landscapes of their combined imaginations. Viewers can also experience commentary from Barker, Davis and Gibbs while looking at an image. In addition, they'll have the unique opportunity to watch Davis and Gibbs compose music to one of the paintings and can conversely watch Barker paint while listening to Davis and Gibbs' music. This project marks the first time Davis, Barker and Gibbs have worked together. Davis and Gibbs have a longstanding relationship and recently wrote and produced songs featured in the forthcoming film Queen Of The Damned. The film—set for release by Warner Brothers next year—is based on the third novel in Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles and was directed by Michael Rymer. Davis is currently in the studio with KORN, recording the follow-up to 1999's triple-platinum Issues with producer Michael Beinhorn. The band's CD is due out later this year on Immortal/Epic.

Guitarist John Sykes (WHITESNAKE/THIN LIZZY) has shot down the persistent rumors of an impending BLUE MURDER reunion (featuring drummer Carmine Appice and bassist Tony Franklin) by stating that, at this point, there are no plans to reform the band.
