Vocalist Kyle Thomas of New Orleans' EXHORDER, cited by many as the originators of the riff-heavy power-groove approach popularized by PANTERA, has issued the following update on the (in)activities in the group's ranks since their reformation earlier in the year: “I must apologize to all of you that are good enough to tolerate our inactivity. At times, we truly do not deserve the loyalty, which you all have shown over the years. Yes, there is new product in the future. No, it is not beyond demo stages. There is no show for the near future, but if you keep on us perhaps we'll get off of our pathetic asses and do something for a goddamn change. Many apologies, Kyle

Finland's NIGHTWISH have parted ways with bassist Sami Vänskä, who has been with the group since their Oceanborn release, and have replaced him, at least for the recording of the next album and subsequent tour, by Marco Hietala, who is known for his previous work with TAROT and SINERGY. GRAVES, the new band of former MISFITS vocalist Michale Graves, drummer Dr. Chud, guitarist Tom Logan, and ex-FAST TIMES bassist Graham Westfield, are in the middle of a headlining US tour, upon the completion of which they will enter a Los Angeles studio with producer Ron Goudie (i.e. SOCIAL DISTORTION, TSOL, GWAR, etc.) to record a demo for shopping/promotional purposes. Described by Graves as 'the angst of NIRVANA with the straight-ahead punkiness of the RAMONES', GRAVES' music “blends back and forth... it's very mysterious, like the DOORS sometimes. It's got that darkness and the mystery to it. At times like David Bowie as well, almost showy. It's got a little color from the MISFITS... that comic book color to it.'

According to the guitarist's official web site, Yngwie Malmsteen's DOD YJM308 Overdrive pedal will debut in January 2002 at NAMM. The company is sending out the YJM-308 prototype this week for Yngwie's approval. According to their engineers who tested it on scopes and Real Time Analyzers next to an original Grey 250 from the 1970's, it is virtually identical in all aspects of tone and gain. The electronic fingerprint is a perfect match - a much more faithful reproduction than the current Yellow 250 Reissue 250. (Note: The Yellow reissue is a match to the later original yellow models). Compared to the current 250 Reissue, the new YJM308 has a bit more gain, is thicker, warmer, and fuller. It also has a more organic 'grind' to the overdrive and no hint of fuzzy, buzzy clipping. This was also a general observation of the originals when comparing most gray ones to the later yellow ones. Yngwie is planning to make an extended appearance at the NAMM trade show to promote his DOD YJM308 plus various other signature products.
