BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME Vocalist: We Don't Want To Just Write Another 'Colors' Record

December 26, 2008

Spiritech of PyroMusic.net recently conducted an interview with vocalist Tommy Rogers of the Raleigh, North Carolina-based progressive metalcore quintet BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

PyroMusic.net: "Colors" has been out for some time now and received probably the best reviews and sales you guys have ever experienced. Has that response surprised you at all?

Tommy Rogers: Definitely, yeah. I think when we were writing this record, you know, we knew it was a big step from what we'd done before, and you always hope when you make a new record that your fans and the press are going to accept it. But we were really surprised and very pleased with the response to the record. We feel like it's the best thing we've done and it's awesome to see our fans and the press kind of feel the same.

PyroMusic.net: In what way do you feel it's an improvement on say, "The Anatomy Of..." or your other past releases?

Tommy Rogers: Umm, I think that as we've got older we've just figured out what we were doing, you know? I think we've become a lot better songwriters and I think when we started that record we had a very new mindset, we weren't trying to repeat any of our other records and, I don't know, it was just the right place to go for us. I felt that as musicians it really showed where we were. We worked really hard on it and it came out great.

PyroMusic.net: You mentioned how the band played "Colors" in its entirety on one tour. A lot of bands talk about doing that kind of thing but never actually do it. What motivated you to actually go out and do it?

Tommy Rogers: Yeah, I don't know, we were talking about doing it and we thought, "This is the only time we're going to have to go for it," so we just went for it. Like you said, there's not really any bands in our genre who have ever done that... we thought it was the right record to do it. We also wanted to show that even though this record was pretty crazy and musically a step up from what we'd done before, that we can pull it off live. 'Cause I think a lot of bands out there in heavy music are recording music that they can't really play. We really wanted to show our fans that this record means something to us and we wanted to present it as it was meant to be presented.

PyroMusic.net: How much longer do you guys plan to keep touring for "Colors" before heading to the studio to really work hard on the new album?

Tommy Rogers: Well, we're done touring, this is our last tour for this album. We're not playing any more in the States, this Australian tour is the last tour for it. Right now we're just taking some time off. We started writing last week and it's going really, really well and... I don't know, it's difficult to know when we'll be recording but hopefully we'll be done by summer so we can start touring again in the summer. We'll see how it goes!

PyroMusic.net: Do you have any idea of where the next album could go musically?

Tommy Rogers: It's hard to tell right now, it's way too early. But I definitely... we don't want to just write another "Colors" record, we definitely want to progress with our music and write better songs and that's what we intend to do.
