Bulgaria's 'Metal Mayor' Is Shoo-In For Second Term
August 18, 2007Novinite.com reports that Bulgarian GERB party of Sofia mayor Boyko Borissov will back Tsonko Tsonev, known as Bulgaria's "metal mayor" for a second term as mayor of the town of Kavarna at the local elections in fall.
"Kavarna mayor Tsonko Tsonev is a member of GERB and has always supported the goals of the party and its leader Boyko Borissov," GERB chairman Tsvetan Tsvetanov said on Saturday.
"He is a successful mayor, who has done a lot for his town during his first term, as well as putting it on the map nationally and internationally," he added.
Tsonkov is very popular in the town and considered a shoo-in for a second term, during which he wants to improve the water utility and road infrastructure in the town, as well repairing all schools in the municipality.
Additionally, he plans to continue his efforts to bring world-known rock bands for gigs in the out-of-the-way town on Bulgaria's Black Sea coast.
Tsonkov, a lawyer by education, is a native of Kavarna and is well-known in Bulgaria as the "metal mayor" for his love of hard rock, which he has turned into a money-spinning business for the town.
The annual Kaliakra Rock Fest has brought DEEP PURPLE, HELLOWEEN, MOTÖRHEAD and MANOWAR to the city in the three years of its existence, with ROBERT PLANT, NAZARETH and SEPULTURA also playing gigs, attracting rock fans from throughout Bulgaria and neighbouring countries.
