BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE On 'Social Apocalypse' LP: 'With This Album, We've Tuned Down To The Lowest Tuning We've Ever Tuned To'
November 5, 2026In a new interview with Portugal's Look magazine, guitarist Michael "Padge" Paget and bassist/vocalist Jamie Mathias of Welsh metallers BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE spoke about their upcoming album, "Social Apocalypse", which will arrive on March 19, 2027, via Spinefarm. Regarding the inspiration for the album title, Jamie said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): "Well, that's a title Matt [Tuck, BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE vocalist/guitarist] came up with, and I just think it explains a lot what's going on in the world at the moment. And everyone's glued to [their phones], including myself. It's a habit. Everything's controlled by it. And we don't realize how much we use it and rely on it. I think we just gotta be aware of what's going on."
Michael chimed in: "What's the term? Doomscrolling. You might be watching a movie on Netflix and without actually consciously knowing, you just reach for your phone and you tap Facebook, and all of a sudden you're scrolling and you have no idea why. It's just force of habit. But the algorithm is choosing everything that you see. So, yeah. Be careful. Be very aware. And I think that's the idea around 'Social Apocalypse'. People are just zombies when it come to the phones. The attention span's gone… It can reach a point where it's very unhealthy for people. But also this is the times we're living in, and, unfortunately, it is what it is."
Asked if "Social Apocalypse" went through a lot of changes before it became what it is, Michael said: "[There were] so many changes. It was going this way. Then it was going that way. Then that way. It was going over here. It was going back to the original. So many changes. And I think that's a process of every album. But you have to sort of find the theme. You go through a complete spectrum of writing process — demoing, flavors, colors, riffs, et cetera — and then you come right the way around back to the beginning, and then you find your route, your road. But I think that's the challenge of every album. You have to sort of find a body of songs and a theme which defines the direction of the flavor of the album, and then it becomes easier. To find that is... Especially with Matt, he likes to test the process."
Added Jamie: "Yeah, and explore a lot of different ideas, which is great. But it's usually one song or two songs where there's a vibe on that. And it's, like, 'Oh, yeah. Okay. We can see now what direction this album is gonna go down.' It usually takes one or two songs for that to happen, and then you're kind of on your way then."
Asked if the members of BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE work together or separately during the songwriting process, Michael said: "Both. Everyone sort of throws their five pennies' worth in. Ideas, demos, riffs, it all goes in the pot. And I guess Matt being sort of the main songwriter, he sort of forms a vision. 'Cause he's crazy. He sees the entire picture as a songwriter way fucking different than I can. So, we trust him, and he gets all of the juice, and then he makes his smoothie."
As for how BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE goes about combining "new elements" in its music with "old elements" that everybody identifies with the band, Michael said: "I think the DNA has to be there. And I think it always will, with BULLET. You have to be yourself, but it's so easy to lose yourself trying to be a new version of yourself. But I think we've always sort of kept our DNA, which is a big part of our music, really. You have to keep some of the DNA but also branch off and try new things, 'cause you can't write the same record over and over."
Jamie added: "As musicians, you just gotta try new stuff. I think the DNA is always gonna be there, 'cause it's Matt's vocals. With this album, we've tuned down to the lowest tuning we've ever tuned to on any album, which is the heaviest we've sounded. I think the next single we're gonna be releasing is probably one of the heaviest riffs BULLET has ever recorded."
This past September, BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE released the "Social Apocalypse" title track. It marked the band's first new song in four years.
On the title track, Tuck rages against "the end of the world as we know it," when "all hope has faded." An accompanying video for "Social Apocalypse", directed, shot, edited by Chris Wade (Dogbrain Videos),is available to view below.
Thematically, "Social Apocalypse" combines the bare-faced lyrical introspection of people weathered and worn by the modern world with wide-eyed observations on a planet that feels as if it is coming off the rails at every turn.
"Everything in life is changing at such a rapid pace, and it is hard to find a great deal of positivity when you look at events in the world," Tuck says. "People are being pitted against each other. The world is full of conflict instead of unity. As a father, I look at what the world is like for younger people, and how completely different it is now."
Working once more with producer Carl Bown — a veteran of four BULLET albums, alongside work with SLEEP TOKEN, WHILE SHE SLEEPS, MALEVOLENCE and more — each new album track was diligently scrutinized, constructed, and polished to its immaculate final form.
"Carl doesn't let you settle," Tuck notes. "He is always ready to speak up, push and challenge you to be the best version of you."
There are two collaborations on "Social Apocalypse" — a rarity for BULLET that brings thrilling new dynamics to the record — with AGAINST THE CURRENT vocalist Chrissy Costanza stepping in to duet on "In The Absence Of You", and a hair-raising vocal turn from LORNA SHORE's Will Ramos on "I Don't Trust Tomorrow".

BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE has also announced its biggest tour yet, taking in arenas all over Europe. Having sold out The O2 arena in London last year as part of a co-headline run with TRIVIUM, they are now returning as the sole headline act.
PENDULUM will perform as very special guest across all shows, with DARK DEVINE appearing as openers.
Tuck describes the creation of every BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE album as a "journey." Each, the frontman attests, is about capturing the essence of a moment in time; a freeze-frame snapshot of its creators and the world around them. Nothing forced, nothing scripted, nothing disingenuous. Such purity of creation is a methodology that has led to BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE establishing themselves as one of Britain's all-time most celebrated rock and metal exports. A truly global phenomenon, their multi-million album sales, multi-billion streaming numbers, a glut of awards, and regular appearances on the biggest stages across the globe remarkably only go some way to telling the story of their influence and impact.
The culmination of those experiences and achievements is writ large across "Social Apocalypse", their eighth full-length album, which comprises a lifetime's learnings and inspirations and definitively captures every facet of the BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE sound in masterfully honed results. Reminiscent of the band's storied past without ever being repetitive of it, it's with a steely-eyed determination to break new ground that the beloved hallmarks of BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE past and present are now refocused and re-energized for the future.
