CHEVELLE To Play CBGB Benefit Show
July 20, 2005Launch Radio Networks reports: CHEVELLE will play a benefit show at legendary New York club CBGB on August 4, with all proceeds going to the "Project Save CBGB" campaign. The club, which launched the careers of the RAMONES, LIVING COLOUR, THE TALKING HEADS and countless others, is in danger of losing its lease and closing down at the end of August. Drummer Sam Loeffler told Launch why CHEVELLE believes it's vital to keep the club alive. "We played there several times when we were an up-and-coming band, we played there three or four times and, you know, it's just a cool thing to be part of, and it's a crazy rock club," he said. "People started out touring playing clubs like that, and I just think it's an important part of our history and we wanna do whatever we can to help out and keep our history around."
In a statement, CHEVELLE singer and guitarist Pete Loeffler added, "For the past three decades, CBGB owner Hilly Kristal has provided a safe haven for rock and roll...This club is part of rock history. We can't let it go quietly."
CBGB's lease runs out on August 31. The club's landlord, the Bowery Residence Committee (BRC),wants to double the rent on the space. CBGB became synonymous with the explosion of punk rock in the Seventies, as bands like the RAMONES, BLONDIE, TELEVISION and the TALKING HEADS were launched there. Later years have featured early gigs by groups like PEARL JAM, SOUNDGARDEN and LIVING COLOUR.
CHEVELLE is currently touring in support of its third album, "This Type Of Thinking (Could Do Us In)", which has sold 592,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
