CHUCK SCHULDINER's Mother: 'Seems Hard To Believe It Has Been Six Years Today'

December 13, 2007

DEATH/CONTROL DENIED mastermind Chuck Schuldiner passed away exactly six years ago today — on December 13, 2001 — at age 34 after a a battle with pontine glioma, a rare type of brain tumor. His mother, Jane Schuldiner, has issued the following statement:

"Dear fans and friends, I'm sorry to write so late in the day but hopefully you will go onto EmptyWords [DEATH's official web site] and read this message.

"I inserted a memorial [with a guest book for people to sign — Ed.] to Chuck in the Orlando Sentinel as I usually do on the 13th of December. In tribute to him, I spent the day fulfilling requests Chuck had asked of us, difficult emotionally but rewarding also. It was past time.

"Seems hard to believe it has been six years today, but I think I will always be saying that very same thing in the future. Time stands still that way.

"Thanks to all of you who remember Chuck, not just this day, but all the days of the year, and who write to tell me so.

"Thanks to all who have sent portraits they have drawn or painted, I cannot express my feelings well enough. I received a wonderful one today from Maissa of France. I can never have too many, I frame and hang them all over the house and constantly enjoy them. Someday I'll take a picture and send it to EmptyWords to show you.

"You are a comfort and joy to me, always. I frequently wonder what I would do without you.

"I will answer all the emails as soon as possible, I am 300 behind now, but making progress."

Back in December 2006, the Greek edition of Rock Hard magazine published a tribute to late DEATH mastermind Chuck Schuldiner, including statements and stories from many of the people that played with Chuck — such as Kam Lee, Chris Reifert, Terry Butler, Steve DiGiorgio, Richard Christy and Paul Masvidal — plus music industry notables who dealt with Schuldiner, and other musicians, among them Michael Amott (ARCH ENEMY),Niklas Sundin (DARK TRANQUILLITY),Donald Tardy (OBITUARY),Alex Webster (CANNIBAL CORPSE),Trym (EMPEROR),Dan Lilker (NUCLEAR ASSAULT),Kelly Shaefer (ATHEIST),and Tony Choy (ATHEIST, CYNIC). The magazine has posted all the individual statements from the article (which came out in Greece on December 27, 2006) at this location (scroll down to May 14, 2007 blog entry).

To coincide with what would have been DEATH mastermind Chuck Schuldiner's 40th birthday (Chuck was born on May 13, 1967),the official DEATH web site Empty Words posted the Schuldiner tribute article (entitled "Lust for Life") which was published in Guitar World magazine's April 2007 issue. Check it out at this location.
