DAVE GROHL Says It Was 'Terrifying' To Play '2112' In Front Of RUSH
April 23, 2013According to The Pulse Of Radio, FOO FIGHTERS frontman Dave Grohl said that inducting RUSH into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame last Thursday night (April 18) was "one of the most special nights of my life." After inducting the band, Grohl, FOOS drummer Taylor Hawkins and producer Nick Raskulinecz donned wigs and kimonos — identical to the ones that RUSH wore on the back of their classic "2112" album — to play the overture to "2112" before stepping aside and letting the real band take the stage.
Grohl told Rolling Stone, "It's terrifying to play your favorite band's song in front of your favorite band. It's one thing to sit in the basement and woodshed '2112', and it's another to stand in front of RUSH in a fucking kimono and a wig and try to use a wah-wah pedal in your platform shoes. It was amazing."
Grohl also spoke about the effect that hearing RUSH and "2112" for the first time had on him, saying, "When I got '2112' when I was eight years old; it fucking changed the direction of my life. I heard the drums. It made me want to become a drummer."
Grohl spoke about meeting RUSH drummer Neil Peart for the first time at the Hall Of Fame rehearsals, saying, "This man was as influential as any religion or any hero or any person in someone's life. He said, 'So nice to meet you. Can I make you a coffee?' And he made me a coffee, man. And later on that night, I went to dinner and had a couple glasses of wine and I started fucking crying because my hero made me a fucking coffee."
When asked about the chances of Grohl's former band NIRVANA getting inducted next year when they'll be eligible, Grohl replied, "Wow. I didn't even know that. Interesting. Well, hopefully they make us wait as long as RUSH did, because did you see all their fucking fans out there tonight?"
An edited version of the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction ceremony will air on HBO on May 18.
