DAVE LOMBARDO Says 'It's An Honor' To Be An Influence On Younger Drummers

Rock Talk conducted an interview with former SLAYER and current PHILM drummer Dave Lombardo during his recently completed clinic tour of Brazil. You can now watch the chat below.

Asked what it feels like to meet fans and fellow drummers who regard him as an integral part of the classic SLAYER sound as well as one of the finest thrash metal drummers in the world, Lombardo said, "It's an honor. I think it's a big responsibility. I'm very happy. I see what happens when I meet the fans, the drummers… They're very excited, they get very emotional. Yesterday, there was this grown man — I mean, he must have been 35 years old — and he was just very happy to meet me, and he was crying. And it's, like, 'Dude, it's okay. It's okay.' And then there was this other kid that said he didn't know how to speak English, but he gave me a little note to read. He said, 'Dave, I'm really happy to meet you. And I wanna tell you that your drumming has helped me through a very difficult time in my adolescence,' when he was very young. I mean, that means a lot. Because I know what it's like. I know what it is when you're going through a tough time in life, and you listen to music, and that music helps you through your life. So it's very special."

Lombardo was effectively fired from SLAYER after sitting out the band's Australian tour in February/March 2013 due to a contract dispute with the other members of the group. Filling in for him was Jon Dette (TESTAMENT, ANTHRAX).

In a recent interview with Brazil's Portal 7, Lombardo was asked if he has any plans to ever get back together with the members of SLAYER. He replied: "I have no plans. I mean, they can knock on my door, but I don't know if I'll answer. [Laughs]"

Lombardo continued: "I don't know. Right now I'm focused on my new band, I'm focusing on my drum clinics, writing music, on staying creative. And I just stay focused and don't let what happened in the past bother me or in any way inhibit my progress with the future."

PHILM released its sophomore album, "Fire From The Evening Sun", on September 16 (one day earlier internationally) via UDR. The band's lineup is completed by guitarist/vocalist Gerry Paul Nestler (CIVIL DEFIANCE),and bassist Francisco "Pancho" Eduardo Tomaselli (WAR).
