DEF LEPPARD Wanted To Be Like QUEEN

September 17, 2007

VH1 Classic Radio reports: DEF LEPPARD have made quite a name for themselves now that they've been around for some 30 years. But who did the band look up to when they were forming?

Phil Collen (guitar): "QUEEN were the most obvious reference point for all five of us to say that's the kind of band that we want to be in because they were everything. They were glam, they were grand, they were flamboyant, they were musical and they were clever enough to do entire songs with no guitars in them whatsoever and the most ridiculously simplistic drum beats like on 'We Will Rock You'."

Joe Elliott (vocals): "But still be a rock band as well."

DEF LEPPARD's upcoming record will be called "Songs From The Sparkle Lounge", but no release date has been set for it. It will be their first album since last year's "Yeah!", which was a collection of covers of songs by artists who had influenced the band. Their most recent studio album of original material was 2002's "X".
