DEFTONES Beat Unusual Addiction to Tour

October 5, 2006

DEFTONES drummer Abe Cunningham told AOL Music that the band was nearly grounded from live dates due to guitarist Stephen Carpenter's unusual addiction.

"He was obsessed with Tiger Woods's [video] golf game," Cunningham said. "It got so bad that we weren't going to be able to go on tour if he wasn't going to be able to get his f***ing good Internet signal each day.

"Then the '05 [version] came out and he had to start playing that, and then he became number one at it in the world," Cunningham said.

Carpenter finally managed to overcome his habit. How, we asked? By picking up a real club, which he uses for practice before DEFTONES concerts.

"He hopes to become the next Chi Chi Rodriquez, I think," Cunningham said with a laugh.

DEFTONES will release its new album, "Saturday Night Wrist", on October 31 via Warner. An e-card for the CD can be accessed at this location.

As previously reported, DEFTONES' video for their new single, "Hole in the Earth", has been posted online at YouTube.com. The clip was shot in New York with director Brian Lazzaro (COHEED AND CAMBRIA, MEST).

The group began working on the follow-up to the group's self-titled 2003 effort with producer Dan "The Automator" Nakamura, before switching to Bob Ezrin and finally finishing with Terry Date, who's been the DEFTONES' regular producer since their debut, and Shaun Lopez (THE REVOLUTION SMILE, ex-FAR).
