DEVILDRIVER Frontman Talks Touring, Next Studio Album
December 5, 2009Cameron Edney of Professional Music Photography recently conducted an interview with vocalist Dez Fafara of Santa Barbara, California metallers DEVILDRIVER. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.
Professional Music Photography: When it comes to touring today, how does it compare to when you were first starting out? I would imagine along the way you have learnt many valuable lessons on how to survive the road! ....
Dez: Definitely. Sleep is first and foremost! Personally, I don't drink hard alcohol, so that's the way that is. Otherwise, sleep, good food and good friends. You have to try and live the healthy lifestyle out here, 'cause, like right now when you have done 10-11 shows in a row and in five weeks you've had two days off, it takes its toll! In the end, when you hit the 10th and 11th show, I think you really start striving and tonight we were at 110% after eleven days in a row, functioning as one!
Professional Music Photography: Dez, for a moment I want to get your thoughts on the latest album, "Pray for Villains". The album has been out for a while now. Looking back over the recording process, is there anything you would have changed or wish you had done differently?
Dez: No, not at all. I think that DEVILDRIVER grows from record to record! We diversify and we have a great time with it, I wouldn't change a damn thing, no, not from the first record 'till now! I've already heard four songs from the new record that we're getting ready to record next year and it's going to be far beyond anything that we've done!
Professional Music Photography: Mate, obviously you guys have started penning tracks for the next studio album. Tell us about those songs that you have already put together.
Dez: I think that the four tracks that I've heard are a total evolution in what DEVILDRIVER does. They're a mixture of the third and fourth record, but on a whole other level with guitar attack, bass attack and drum attacks! My vocals are going to progress as well due to the music and I can't wait to see what happens with us. I've been constantly saying that our fourth, fifth and sixth albums are going to be the best 'cause we hadn't been together very long since we made our first and second records. It's important for people to know that most bands are together for five or six years before they make their first record and we've only been together that long now.
