'DIMEBAG' DARRELL ABBOTT Honored With OZZFEST Superjam

August 11, 2008

A special one-time only all-star tribute to fallen PANTERA/DAMAGEPLAN guitarist and Texas native "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott was held this past Saturday, August 9 at the one-day Ozzfest at Dallas' Pizza Hut Park.

The tribute to "Dimebag" Darrell featured Abbott's brother, Vinnie Paul (acting as musical director and playing drums),along with an array of prominent hard rockers. According to RollingStone.com, "'Mouth for War' — with HATEBREED's Jamey Jasta on vocals and SLAYER's Kerry King on guitar — kicked off the tribute set. 'A New Level' followed, with Max Cavalera and King Diamond sharing vocals and King and ANTHRAX's Scott Ian tag-teaming on guitar. An acoustic cover of PINK FLOYD's 'Wish You Were Here' headed by Jerry Cantrell [and featuring METALLICA's Lars Ulrich on drums], served as a palate cleanser, before METALLICA's Kirk Hammett and HELLYEAH/MUDVAYNE singer Chad Gray came out for 'Fucking Hostile'." (Note: This contradicts a posting on METALLICA's MetOnTour.com web site which claims that Kirk didn't take part in the tribute because "but they ran out of time." Various fan accounts also indicate that Hammett did not take part in the jam.)

Fan-filmed video footage of the Dimebag tribute can be viewed below.
