DIMEBAG Killer's Mother Gets Security After Attack
December 10, 2004Roy Appleton of The Dallas Morning News is reporting that police on Friday increased security for the the mother of the suspected gunman in the deadly attack at a nightclub in Columbus, Ohio.
A Columbus police officer fatally shot Nathan Gale of nearby Marysville after the 25-year-old day laborer and ex-Marine charged into a Dallas band's concert, gunning down four people, including revered heavy-metal guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott of the band DAMAGEPLAN.
Mr. Abbott's former band, PANTERA, may have been the focus of Mr. Gale's anger.
Several friends said Mr. Gale listened to the band all the time.
Police are considering whether he was incensed about the breakup of PANTERA, one of the top metal acts of the 1990s.
Witnesses said Mr. Gale yelled as he was storming the stage that Mr. Abbott broke up PANTERA and fired point blank at Mr. Abbott before turning the gun on the rest of the band and the audience. Police had not verified those reports.
Also killed were Jeff Thompson, head of the band's security, from Dallas; Erik Halk, a club employee; and Nathan Bray, a fan.
Chris Paluska, a member of the band's management team who was serving as tour manager, was shot and is in critical but stable condition.
John "Kat" Brooks, the band's drum technician, was also shot and was to be released from the hospital late Friday, according to a statement on the Atlantic Records web site.
Police said Friday that they may never know Mr. Gale's motive.
