DIMMU BORGIR Guitarist: 'I Wouldn't Mind Touring With A Band Like MARILYN MANSON'

April 18, 2007

Douglas Ventura of Caustic Truths recently conducted an interview with DIMMU BORGIR guitarist Silenoz. A few excerpts from the chat follow:

On the bands's upcoming headlining tour, which features support such diverse support acts as UNEARTH, DEVILDRIVER and KATAKLYSM:

"That's the whole point about it. People tell us, 'Why don't you put a death metal or a black metal tour package?' But we did this to get to new fans. . . [Touring with a bigger band] is also another opportunity and if it comes, we would like to take it. I'm sure this will not be the only U.S. tour. I wouldn't mind touring with a band like MARILYN MANSON."

On the songwriting/recording process for "In Sorte Diaboli":

"The new album was more spontaneous than the previous one. We didn't even make any demos for the songs this time; it all had this spontaneous feel to it. We never have a plan, I don't even know if we even have a formula. We just write what we think is good. . . Hellhammer comes with idea for drum patterns and arranges them for that part of the song. We've known Hellhammer for many years. He's an extremely diverse drummer. I mean, if it's a technical riff or whatever, he can play it and add technical drums over it. He doesn't really have to show off."

"We use triggers on our drums, but we always like to go with a natural drum sound. Our drums sound the way drums sound on an IRON MAIDEN album. You have to look at all the details, and we have a more organic, bigger feel on our drums this time. It's not like on the 'Puritanical' album where the drums sounded way too plastic. I'm really happy about the drum sound and Hellhammer's drumming in general on the new album."

On whether DIMMU BORGIR has ever had problems with religious groups due to their explicit anti-Christian views:

"Not really. Yes, we do have Satanic fundaments and I don't really care how people perceive us. Sure, there have been some demonstrations at some of the venues we've played at, but nothing major. The only thing these people do is create more promotion for us, which is always, of course, a good thing."
