DOUG 'PINHEAD' BRADLEY Says DANI FILTH Is Nothing Like His Black Metal Stage Persona
February 13, 2008In the January/February 2008 issue of Metal Edge (Serj Tankian cover),Doug "Pinhead" Bradley chatted with "Silver Scream" columnist Bryan Reesman (web site) about the "Hellraiser" franchise, working with Clive Barker in the Seventies, and his admiration for Peter Cushing. He also offered the following thoughts on CRADLE OF FILTH frontman Dani Filth:
Metal Edge: How did you get involved with CRADLE OF FILTH, and how do you view that experience?
Bradley: Dani and I kind of knew each other, and when they were doing "Midian", he contacted me and said he'd love to have me record some stuff for the album. I went down to their studio in Sussex and did the recording for them. I like Dani. Black metal is not necessarily my musical cup of tea, although I do think CRADLE are possibly one of the best in the genre. I have a lot of time for Dani, and I really like his writing, so that made it easy to do. I did find a new respect for the genre because a couple of the tracks I had to do had these bizarre time signatures, and it was kind of difficult to find the off-beat. I came out of it saying, "Next time could you just write something in 4/4 and make it easy?" But I had a great time doing it, and then they asked me to do it again for "Nymphetamine" and "Thornograpy".
Metal Edge: What is Dani like away from his stage persona?
Bradley: You'd have trouble matching the two together. In a sense, even seeing him onstage, he's a little guy with this voice. He's really got the two voices — the deep boom and the high-pitched scream — and you wonder where the heck they come from. But he's a funny guy away from the stage persona. He's sharp and witty, and we have a lot of good fun together. If you met him without the wild contact lenses and the multi-colored dreads in, I think one of the last things you'd ever assume that Dani was would be the frontman for a black metal band. He doesn't really fit the bill, but I love the contrast of that. I have a lot of respect for him.
