DUFF MCKAGAN'S LOADED Continues To Support Veterans
June 9, 2011Rock and roll legend Duff McKagan and his band LOADED continue to support veterans through the donation of proceeds from their music and the silent auction and raffle at a recent show in Seattle.
Watch this video for an interview with McKagan telling the story of how he was moved by the stories of returning veteran and footage from LOADED's halftime performance at Qwest Field in November.
LOADED's partnership with VA Puget Sound started in 2010. "In November, we played the halftime show at the Seattle Seahawks' Veterans and Military Appreciation Day," said Seattle native McKagan. "I wrote the song 'Fight On' after being inspired by the stories of disabled vets returning from Afghanistan and Iraq and recovering from their wounds. The day after the game, we met some of the patients at VA Puget Sound hospital in Seattle. We had an awesome time visiting with men and women from several generations that were just glad to know that someone who took the time to say hello. Some knew who we were and some didn't but that wasn't the point. They simply appreciated not being forgotten."
Since then, LOADED has also donated all proceeds from the iTunes sales of "Fight On" and "We Win" to the hospital's patient fund. The fund is used to meet whatever patient needs are greatest at the time. In the past this has included assisting patients in the spinal cord injury unit and the homeless prevention program.
The silent auction and raffle also benefitted the patient fund. Auction items included a LOADED autographed CD and photo, autographed PEARL JAM poster, "Deadliest Catch" boat tour, original '80s print of Duff McKagan by Marc Cantor, celebrity-autographed instruments and autographed sports memorabilia.
McKagan wrote about supporting veterans several times in his weekly Seattle Weekly and ESPN columns.
