Ex-DREAM THEATER Keyboardist Says He Identifies With Simpler, Less Majestic Music

February 9, 2005

Ex-DREAM THEATER keyboardist Kevin Moore spoke with Electricbasement.com about why he chose to express himself with CHROMA KEY and leave DREAM THEATER behind a few years back. "Toward the end of DREAM THEATER, I enjoyed its complex method less and less and identified with music that conveyed less, that had a less majestic, grandiose kind of expression," he explained. Asked whether he preferred the more simple and peaceful musical expression now, he confirms, "Yeah, peaceful. The struggles are more internal."

His latest CHROMA KEY release on InsideOut Music, "Graveyard Mountain Home", is a departure from the normal rock record. "Instead of recording something conventional, I wanted to find an old film with a certain mood and allow it to guide the songs," he said.

He finds a balance in the art and appealing to pop sensibilities, "It is unconventional," Moore said. "I limited myself that way. My hope is that even though it’s unconventional, it will still be effective. I didn't want to put out a challenging album, some experimental thing and say, 'If you don’t like it, you're not advanced enough.' I wanted a pop album, one to be successful on a certain level. At least the CHROMA KEY people who liked the other CHROMA KEY albums will still be able to get into this. There's more depth to this album than the past two CHROMA KEY albums."
