Ex-NIRVANA Bassist: 'I Don't Trust PRESIDENT BUSH'
January 24, 2003Former NIRVANA bassist Krist Novoselic has questioned the motives behind military action against Iraq, suggesting that George W. Bush is more interested in political gain than democracy and freedom.
"I don't trust Bush's intentions," he said in an online posting. "I am convinced that he could care less about democracy or freedom.
"His actions on medicinal marijuana initiatives are a perfect example of his disregard for freedom and democracy."
He continued: "I'm sure the Bushies have the situation figured out. They know that it will be relatively easy, unlike North Korea with its huge army and hilly terrain.
"Bush will use a successful military action in Iraq for political gain. The US press give him a free ride anyway. What's the difference?"
However, while not supporting war, Novoselic said he believed action against Saddam Hussein would result in improved conditions for the people of Iraq.
"Saddam is a very bad man," he said. "He's got to go. I hope we don't lose one American life. I hope no Iraqis die. Indeed the USA supported Hussein. The USA continues to support all kinds of unsavory characters.
"When it's all over and done, I'm sure they'll lift the sanctions and try and put it in some kind of democracy," he said.
"So what if the oil corporations divvy things up? They run the world anyway. What's the difference? At least things will be better for the Iraqi people.
"The people in Iraq have suffered for too long. Gigantic oil cartels run the world. A military strike and subsequent regime change will only really change one thing things will be better for the Iraqi people.
"Some people are going to die. Big oil is not."
