Ex-SPIRITUAL BEGGARS Frontman Says Band 'Have Lost Their Identity' Following His Departure

July 13, 2005

France's VS-webzine.com recently conducted an interview with former SPIRITUAL BEGGARS and current KAYSER frontman Spice. A couple of excerpts from the interview follow:

VS-webzine.com: Your voice sounds similar to Tom Araya's voice at [times] on [KAYSER's debut album] "Kayserhof". Do you agree? What does SLAYER represent for you?

Spice: "I have never had Tom Araya as a personal favorite. But I rather be compared with Mr. Araya than the patetic gay/poser (who sings about nothing but bullshit) David Coverdale. For me, SLAYER represent the dark and the aggressive with a brain. In my ears. Bands who take the dark and the aggressive futher only sound corny.

VS-webzine.com: have you heard the last two SPIRITUAL BEGGARS CDs? What are your thoughts about these two CDs? Do you think your voice could have fit to these CDs?

Spice: "If I was still in that band, the music wouldn't sound like [it does] on 'Demons' [SPIRITUAL BEGGARS' latest album]. Most people don't know I wrote (at least) half of the stuff in BEGGARS. The only songs I haven't been involved in are 'Magnificent Obsession' and the song 'Mantra', exept for the lyrics. I think they have lost their identity. I listen to their new one a couple of weeks ago. Man… I really thought it [would] be better. If the song didn't sound like WHITESNAKE or BAD COMPANY, it sounded like any other boring stoner rock band out there. I guess you have to be a totally die-hard BEGGARS fan to like it. I have not heard 'On Fire' except for the video song, which gave me a little of a boost for my self-confidence."
