Finger-Fitness Guru Hangs Out With DEEP PURPLE In China

Hamilton finger-fitness guru Greg Irwin usually calls me when he returns from one of his trips to China, if something memorable has happened. This time, he was calling to report that, while in Beijing, he partied with DEEP PURPLE, of all people.
"I would call it the dream of a lifetime, except that I never dreamed it would happen," he says.
Greg extended his most recent stay in Beijing by three days when he heard Cuijian, the No. 1 rock star in the People's Republic, would be opening for DEEP PURPLE, of all people, in concert at the Workers' Stadium.
Greg showed me the video he made of Cuijian's sound check, followed by DEEP PURPLE performing "Highway Star" and "My Woman from Tokyo", followed by some footage of the band's keyboard player, Don Airey, sitting in with the combo at a jazz bar called The Big Easy.
Afterwards, Greg said, he partied down with Roger Glover, DEEP PURPLE's original bass player. He showed Glover one of his finger ballets and explained that it was partly because of DEEP PURPLE that he invented finger fitness.
"I told him about driving around Hamilton as a kid, listening to DEEP PURPLE on eight-track cassettes," Greg says.
"For me, it was like coming full circle. Then he asked me if I'd like to hear his digitally remastered version of 'Highway Star'.
"To which I said, 'Would I?!?'"
