FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH Bassist: The Hater Comments On BLABBERMOUTH.NET 'Don't Faze Me At All'

November 22, 2011

Don de Leaumont of The Great Southern Brainfart recently conducted an interview with new FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH bassist Chris Kael. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

The Great Southern Brainfart: Every now and then, a band comes along that people just seem to love to hate. Web sites like Metal Sucks and Blabbermouth have some users that love to hate on FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH. What is one big misconception about FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH that you could put to rest?

Chris: People always get on us about the whole "tough-guy" image but they don't realize that it's totally tongue in cheek with us. We read the comments on Blabbermouth, and it's almost like we're poking a bear with a stick and getting him riled up. I admit it. I'm a Blabbermouth reader, and have been reading it since before it was even on Roadrunner Records. That's where I go to get my metal news. Now that I'm in FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH and I read the comments on there, it's really crazy. I can see how some people would get upset about it, but we really don't at all. It's an entertaining read for us. I just wish they'd put some thought behind the barbs. [laughs] Then I would absolutely love it. One of my favorite ones was when I first joined. I don't know who wrote it, so if you're reading this and you wrote it, this was great. They put my picture up there and somebody was like, "Look at this typical Vegas douchebag. It looks like he just got out of prison and has a crystal-meth habit." I texted my friend as asked if he had seen the bit about me having a crystal-meth addiction? I was like, "Did they just call me skinny? They just called me skinny." Hell yeah! The fat kid in me just loved that one. [laughs]

The Great Southern Brainfart: That's hilarious. The hater comments are always so much more fun to read anyways.

Chris: [laughs] The negative is always out there and they're going to be the most vocal, but come to the show and you'll see people enjoying the show and singing along with every word. The hater comments don't faze me at all. Say what you want, but I'm having a great time. There's always going to be haters everywhere. [laughs] It keeps you grounded and allows you not to think too much of yourself when people are saying shit like, "Look! Varg just joined DEATH PUNCH." [laughs]

The Great Southern Brainfart: You guys all really seem to just roll with it and that's cool.

Chris: Yeah, we are completely laid back and we absolutely love it. It keeps me entertained out here on the road.

The Great Southern Brainfart: I loved that KISS always seemed to be very unapologetic and that same attitude comes across with FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH. With all that hate and shit that you guys get, I've never heard you guys back down or ask forgiveness for anything.

Chris: Man, we just do what we do. We try to craft great songs. The songs are always going to be there, and if you can get those songs out there, people are going to like it and enjoy it and on the flipside, Blabbermouth's gonna hate it, too. [laughs]

The Great Southern Brainfart: Blabbermouth may run this interview, so I'm sure you'll get some entertaining comments.

Chris: [laughs] If you're going to leave hater comments on Blabbermouth, dig deep and put some thought into it. If I hear "Five Finger Butt Plug" one more time Seriously, it's been done. I am reading it. C'mon. Let's work together [laughs].

The Great Southern Brainfart: Hate with creativity, y'all!

Chris: [laughs] Exactly. Put some thought into it. I'm all for hate as long as it's got some thought behind it.
