Florida County Bans Public Suicide In Response To Rock Band
October 22, 2003Pinellas County commissioners have banned public suicide, directly responding to a rock concert that promised such an act this month in St. Petersburg, Florida, according to the Associated Press.
The band HELL ON EARTH never delivered on a promise to feature a suicide as a statement in support of euthanasia at an Oct. 4 show. The publicity preceding the event prompted the St. Petersburg City Council to pass an emergency order forbidding the act last month.
Pinellas County commissioners went a step further Tuesday (October 21),unanimously voting to ban public suicide as well as the promotion of public suicide for commercial or entertainment purposes. The countywide ordinance takes effect in November and carries a maximum penalty of $500 and up to 60 days in jail.
