Former HAWKWIND Bassist ALAN DAVEY To Release New Solo Album 'Astrolabes And Sunstones' In September

August 26, 2026

Legendary bassist, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Alan Davey will release his new solo album, "Astrolabes And Sunstones", on September 12 via Savant Guarde Records.

For more than four decades, Davey has been a major figure in progressive and space rock. Best known for his two periods as bassist with British rock group HAWKWIND, Davey joined the band in 1984 at just 20 years old, remaining until 1996 before returning for second stint between 2000 to 2006. During these years, he recorded nine studio albums and contributed to more than eighteen official recordings. Bringing a new energy to the band's sound, he became renowned for his commanding stage presence and trademark "Big Bass" approach, establishing himself as a defining presence in HAWKWIND's sound during one of the band's most influential eras.

Recorded at Davey's own home studio in the California desert, "Astrolabes And Sunstones" is an entirely instrumental journey through psychedelic, progressive and soundtrack-inspired landscapes. Conceived as a thematic sequel to his acclaimed "Electrum", his new record explores the outer reaches of sound through cosmic compositions, hypnotic textures and progressive electronic atmospheres.

When Davey departed HAWKWIND in 1996, he increasingly turned toward solo work, creating music that allowed him greater freedom to follow his own musical instincts. After a lengthy period between solo releases, Davey returned with "Electrum" in 2024, his first solo album in eight years. The album was praised by reviewers for its combination of space-rock, melodic songwriting, psychedelic textures, synth-driven atmospheres and adventurous instrumental passages.

Featuring artwork by Alan Arthurs, former HAWKWIND stage director and album artist, "Astrolabes And Sunstones" continues in its exploration with themes of space travel and early Viking navigation. The physical release includes a full booklet of artwork, extending the musical journey into a visual world of discovery. The album was mastered by Paul Cobbold, continuing the creative relationship and making this release another family affair for Savant Guarde Records.

With "Astrolabes And Sunstones", Davey takes his musical journey further, this time without vocals, allowing the instrumentation itself to tell the story. From the stages of HAWKWIND to decades of solo experimentation, Davey once again invites listeners to leave the familiar world behind and venture into something altogether more cosmic.
