Former L.A. GUNS Singer PAUL BLACK To Debut New Band Tonight
September 26, 2008Former L.A. GUNS singer Paul Black has issued the following update:
"Tonight is the first show with my new band. We'll be playing a lot of new songs . It's called PAUL, JO, MUDDY, DENNIS for now. It's the best band I've ever been in. Sounds like THE FACES meets ROLLING STONES but very unique. We're at a restaurant/bar called Mr B's at 1333 Hollywood Way in Burbank, California. We go on at 10 p.m. Hope to see ya there.
"Regarding the BLACK CHERRY reunion on October 16th at the Viper Room, I had planned on doing a reunion show with BLACK CHERRY a couple years ago even before I reunited with L.A. GUNS. We had planned to do it at the Whisky A Go Go with JETBOY. Unfortunately, some of the people we were working with to put the show on made decisions that made it unfeasible for us to do it at that time and we had to back out. Then I got busy touring and couldn't find the time but we all kept in touch. We knew eventually we were gonna do it. Scott Lipps and I finally put everything into action a couple months ago. We found out when everyone could make the trip to L.A. and then he booked the show at the Viper and asked JETBOY and Gilby [Clarke] to do it with us. It was really easy. Everyone is really excited about it.
"I stayed in contact with Curtis (rhythm guitarist Curtis Grant, who died of non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma March, 2007 at age 39) until the end. Everyone in the band took it really hard. Curtis was such a lovable person and he really touched all of us. He really wanted to do this show with us. It's really sad. I know he'll be with us in spirit though. I most admired his enthusiasm, his good nature, His dedication… he knew what it meant to be a band. And, he taught us all.
"There will be a seven-song CD for sale entitled 'Ashes To Diamonds' available at the show for Curtis. Tell us about those initial recordings and how important it is to you to keep the memory of Curtis and BLACK CHERRY alive.
"I've started pre production for a record I'm doing in November with Alexis Records. I have Jo Almeida on guitar, Muddy Stardust on bass and Dennis Morehouse on drums. It's absolutely the best band I've ever been in."
BLACK CHERRY's October 16 show with JETBOY and Gilby Clarke's band KILL FOR THRILLS will be its first show in 16 years and will feature all original members Dave Walsh and Josh Blake on guitars, Scott Lipps on drums, Michael Stevens on bass and Paul Black on lead vocals.
After departing from L.A. GUNS, Paul Black started BLACK CHERRY with Scott Lipps in 1987. Curtis Grant became the band's rhythm guitarist after Josh Blake left to form THE GUTTER CATS. BLACK CHERRY's first shows were opening for JANE'S ADDICTION, 45 GRAVE, IGGY POP, and LORDS OF THE NEW CHURCH. Their one release "Devil In You" on Metal Blade Records' "Street Survivors" compilation received generous radio airplay and catapulted them to local fame. Lasting four years without a deal, they played their last show in April of 1992 at the Whisky A Go Go.
Curtis Grant relocated back to his hometown San Francisco, dedicating much of his time to family, his Native American heritage and community. He continued his music career by forming AMERICAN HEARTBREAK with JET BOY guitarist Billy Rowe. Drummer Scott Lipps went on to establish one of the top entertainment companies in the country, One Model Management in New York. He also has an all-star band in New York City called MARS. Bassist Michael Stevens moved to Maryland where he is raising a family and owns a successful scooter company called Scootertronics. He continued playing music with Tommy and the LOVE TRIBE. Dave Walsh went on to a career as a guitarist for THE EXIES and has been busy as a songwriter. His music has been featured on "Saturday Night Live", "MTV Movie Awards", "Bad Boys 2" and "Guitar Hero". Paul Black formed SONIC BOOM with Jo Almeida and released "Sun Down Yellow Moon". He has spent most of the last decade producing bands and composing movie soundtracks.
