Former MARDUK Bassist Defends Shift In Musical Direction

July 25, 2005

Former MARDUK and current REBELANGELS bassist Roger "Bogge" Svensson (a.k.a. B.War) has defended his and ex-MARDUK singer Erik Hagsted's (a.k.a. Legion) decision to distance themselves from the black metal sounds of their previous group.

REBELANGELS, the new California-based project formed by Hagsted and Svensson, has just uploaded two tracks from their recently four-song pre-production demo. Check out the songs "Fly Again" and "Throw Me to the Wolves" at this location.

The demo, which was recorded at Endarker studio in Norrköping, Sweden, features a guest appearance by session drummer Kleist from the band BREWMASTER. The group's official drummer, whose identity has yet to be revealed, has a contract to fullfil and will join the band for the recording of the group's debut album, tentatively titled "Savage Kind of Grace". Other songs that were recorded during the session were the album's projected title cut, "Savage Kind of Grace", and "Lesser Innocence".

Responding to the criticism to the demo recordings voiced by MARDUK fans on the BLABBERMOUTH.NET comment boards, Svensson has issued the following statement:

"The recordings [on the demo] are indeed raw and for Erik it's definitely a new style of vocals, but we hope that with more conditioning and once the full album is released, we will have a much better recording. I am sure this will disappoint many of our former MARDUK fans as REBELANGELS is not black metal in any sense. We are glad though to be able to expand musically, even if this new band is not well welcomed by the extreme metal fans, it is not meant to be extreme metal."

REBELANGELS were recently joined by a guitarist by the name of Jimmy, whose playing style is said to be "heavily influenced" by James Hetfield, "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott and Zakk Wylde.

Hagsted and Svensson had previously described REBELANGELS as "a dark, heavy rock band with big heavy riffing and normal, raw vocals."
