Free DR PEPPER Coupons Begin Arriving In The Mail

December 17, 2008

Soft drink manufacturer Dr Pepper Snapple Group has reportedly begun sending out coupons (see scan below) for a free can of soda to everyone who requested one as part of its GUNS N' ROSES-related promotional giveaway. Dr Pepper promised everyone in the U.S. a free can of soda if the new GUNS album, "Chinese Democracy", came out before the end of 2008, and on the day of the record's November 23 release, made a coupon available at the Dr Pepper web site for the free drink. But GUNS lawyer Alan S. Gutman told Dr Pepper CEO Larry Young in a letter that the company's web site crashed due to the demand, causing "an unmitigated disaster which defrauded consumers and, in the eyes of vocal fans, 'ruined' the day of 'Chinese Democracy''s release."

One person who received her not one, but TWO, coupons in the mail, told BLABBERMOUTH.NET, "I had called the hotline and left my information on the recording and I also sent an email to their headquarters basically stating the same things Axl's [Rose] lawyers did before his lawyer even made a statement. They responded immediately and apologized and said that I should be receiving my coupon shortly. Which is why I received the two instead of just one. Each coupon is only good up to a $1.59 for either a regular or diet Dr Pepper. It came printed on special paper to prevent fraudulent copies."

According to the Dallas Business Journal, Dr Pepper issued a statement on December 2 saying, "We are disappointed that GN'R's lawyers are turning a fun giveaway into a legal dispute. We simply commented on the delayed release of 'Chinese Democracy' and openly encouraged the band to release it before the end of the year. Axl even expressed support for our efforts earlier in the year."

The company added that it had openly shared its plan with GUNS N' ROSES management before it launched.
