GENE HOGLAN: Drum-Cam Footage Of 'Crystal Mountain' Performance From 'Sick Drummer Camp'

December 14, 2011

Video footage of legendary extreme-metal drummer Gene "The Atomic Clock" Hoglan (TESTAMENT, DARK ANGEL, STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, FEAR FACTORY, DETHKLOK) performing the DEATH song "Crystal Mountain" during the Sick Drummer Camp in early October in Northern California, about an hour north of San Francisco on a five-acre private retreat, can be seen below. This was the first time in 15 years Gene played the track and it was done totally from memory, as a request from one of the students at the camp, Stephen Handler.

The original recording of "Crystal Mountain" can be found on DEATH's classic sixth studio album, "Symbolic", which came out in 1995 via Roadrunner Records.

"Symbolic" was reissued in April 2008 via Roadrunner. The remastered LP included the original album tracks plus several previously unreleased, ultra-rare, mostly instrumental demo recordings that were completed in early 1994 with the lineup of Chuck Schuldiner (guitar),Gene Hoglan (drums) and Steve DiGiorgio (bass). The package also came with brand new liner notes written by longtime metal journalist Don Kaye.

"Symbolic" has sold more than 50,000 copies in the United States in the 16 years since its release, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Hoglan and RealLesson.com have joined forces to offer a rare chance for fans and musicians to receive live, interactive lessons online. According to a posting on the site, "RealLesson.com is your outlet for taking live, interactive lessons online or in person. During the site's pre-launch phase, we are having great success in attracting and securing a wide variety of teachers! There is no limit to the style/genre of the teacher, so you will have no shortage of qualified teachers to learn from. We will not only be providing lessons with musicians, but also sound engineers, tour managers, lighting/stage professionals and other relative categories of instruction."

Hoglan recently released his long-awaited instructional DVD, "The Atomic Clock". Available on Hoglan Industries in the U.S. and on Reversed Records in Canada, the disc showcases Hoglan's three decades of experience of performing and recording with the world's most well-known metal bands such as DEVIN TOWNSEND, DARK ANGEL, DEATH, DETHKLOK, STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, TESTAMENT, ZIMMER'S HOLE, and most recently FEAR FACTORY, along with many others on his resume.
