GOD FORBID Guitarist Says 'OPETH And GOJIRA Were Big Influences' On Band's New Record

July 24, 2008

UK's Rock Sound magazine recently conducted an interview with guitarist Dallas Coyle of the New Jersey metal band GOD FORBID about the band's new album, which features FEAR FACTORY's Christian Olde Wolbers on vocal production duties, and the group's new DVD, "Beneath The Scars Of Glory And Progression". A couple if excerpts from the chat follow.

Rock Sound: In the new issue of Rock Sound, you say that this album is something of a prog album. Have you deviated away from the GOD FORBID sound?

Dallas: "Not really, but we have started using seven string guitars so the actual sound is sonically a lot heavier. We actually didn't think the record was as heavy as our other stuff, but going back and listening to the rough tracks it definitely is pretty heavy. It's way more diverse."

Rock Sound: So have you guys been listening to a heap of RUSH, TOOL and other prog records / bands?

Dallas: "We've always listened to prog music. I guess before we started the band we were listening to DREAM THEATER and OPETH — they have always been a big influence and NEVERMORE are pretty proggy too. OPETH and GOJIRA were big influences on this record."

Rock Sound: How long did it take to write this record?

Dallas: "About four months to write this record, which is double the amount of time we took with 'IV: Constitution Of Treason' — we wrote that in about 28 days. This record is way more evolved. I think it is going to open us up to a whole new crowd, a more mature crowd."

Rock Sound: The key element to the DVD is the entertaining and revealing documentary. Was it fun to make?

Dallas: "It was gruelling, but when we saw the documentary we were like, 'Wow, this is really, really good'. There is no band like us; there has never been a band like us because of the make up of the band — there have been black rock bands, but, as extreme as our band is, I don't think there has been another band with our ethnic make up that has existed like we do. I think if you watch the DVD you can appreciate the band a lot more, you get a good appreciation of who each member of the band is and you get an idea of how different we are."
