GODSMACK Frontman: 'We've Learned How To Appreciate Our Career More'
July 28, 2019GODSMACK recently achieved a career first by landing three No. 1 singles from the same album, "When Legends Rise". The band's latest track, "Under Your Scars", topped the rock radio chart this past week, joining previous chart-toppers "Bulletproof" and the title cut. "Bulletproof" was also the most-played song at rock radio in 2018.
Asked by iRockRadio if he appreciates having three No. 1 singles from the same album more now than he would have 20 years ago when GODSMACK's first album came out, frontman Sully Erna said (see video below): "For me, I definitely appreciate it more now. I think back then, it would have maybe went right over our heads too quickly, 'cause when things are blowing up and everything feels exciting, it's just kind of another thing to go, 'Oh, yeah. Put it with the rest.' The check comes in. 'Yeah, put it with the rest.' But now we've been through the war. We've been through the trenches. We've been through the grind. We've come to the other side of it. We've learned how to appreciate our career more, our brand more, our individuality more, our friendships more. So, to me, it just feels I'm more grateful for it now than I think I would have been if I was younger."
According to Erna, GODSMACK is "not done yet" promoting "When Legends Rise", which is sonically a more commercial-sounding effort than some of the band's previous albums.
"We're really grateful that we've had these three No. 1s in a row," Sully said. "It's actually very surreal, because I feel like… I don't even know — we haven't even done the research to find out what rock bands have had three or more in a row on one album, but we're not done yet. We have another single to come after this, and it's a big rock anthemic kind of rock song that's built for radio. And I'm thinking, wow, we really have a good shot at getting a fourth maybe. So we'll have to revisit that thought when we get to it. Right now, we're focusing on this one. But we're not done with this record yet. There's at least one or two more [singles] that we could release that I think could do really well out there. And I'm glad that people are enjoying it, because this record really felt special to us, so it's kind of nice to see it translate over into the world of the fans."
To coincide with the release of "Under Your Scars", Erna announced the creation of The Scars Foundation to support ongoing mental health struggles facing so many.
GODSMACK has spent more than a year on the road, both in North America and throughout Europe, in support of "When Legends Rise". They just wrapped the European dates on their in-progress world tour and are currently making a number of festival appearances leading straight into the recently added fall shows, with HALESTORM supporting. The new dates kick off September 20 in Green Bay, Wisconsin and wrap October 18 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
