GOJIRA Frontman On Touring With METALLICA: 'They Make Us Feel Important'

June 26, 2012

Guitarist/vocalist Joseph Duplantier of French progressive metallers GOJIRA was recently asked by U.K.'s Metal Hammer magazine what it's like to be touring with their heavy metal heroes METALLICA. "We ignore it," Duplantier laughed. "'Cause otherwise we would have a heart attack or something. I don't know. It's really amazing. We talk to these guys on tour. We see them. We go in their dressing room, or they come to our dressing room. I mean, it's amazing. It's not just a big institution, with people working for them. They're still paying attention to every detail and they talk to the opening act. They're gentlemen. It's very good to be around them. We feel blessed. They make us feel important when they talk to us. It's very rewarding and it's a very nice feeling."

GOJIRA opened for METALLICA — along with LAMB OF GOD — on a North American tour in September/October 2009 and recently made a number of European festival appearances with METALLICA.

In a 2009 interview, Duplantier stated about sharing the stage with METALLICA, "It's like a dream come true. We are a band because of METALLICA. We owe so much to [the METALLICA guys]. When I saw them, the only thing I [wanted] to tell them is, 'Thank you very much,' and what [METALLICA guitarist/vocalist] James Hetfield answered is, 'You're welcome.'"
