GREAT WHITE Nightclub Fire Memorial Service Held

A ceremony held Thursday to honor the victims and survivors of a deadly nightclub fire in West Warwick, Rhode Island was filled with messages of hope and transformation, as Gov. Don Carcieri urged the suffering to find a reason to keep on living, according to the Associated Press.

Rescue workers who responded to the Feb. 20, 2003 fire rang a bell 100 times once for each person who died as a result of the blaze that was sparked by a band's pyrotechnics at The Station nightclub.

Brightly colored butterflies, made by schoolchildren, hung in rows above the families and survivors, who wiped tears during the ceremony. Organizers chose butterflies as the theme of the anniversary service as a symbol of hope and transformation as the state moves on.

Carcieri announced the state and city of Providence would create a butterfly garden at Roger Williams Park Zoo for fire victims, survivors, families and emergency rescue workers who responded to the blaze.
