HALESTORM's LZZY HALE Explains Why She Always Wears High Heels Onstage
June 23, 2019Planet Rock conducted an interview with HALESTORM frontwoman Lzzy Hale at this year's Download festival at Donington Park in Leicestershire, England. You can watch the entire chat below. A few excerpts follow (transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET).
On HALESTORM's successful set at Download:
Lzzy: "It was awesome. My little bro [Arejay, drums] and I had this kind of moment together because we've been in HALESTORM since we were teenagers. It's been like 22 years of HALESTORM — don't do the math. [Laughs] All right, do the math. But it's been a long time. I don't know — he brought this up. When we were in middle school and all of our teachers said, 'This is a stupid idea. Why are you going into music? Especially rock and roll. There's no guarantee and you should really do something else as a backup plan.' We were, like, 'Hell no! We're not doing that.' My little bro turns to me right before we go on: 'Hey, look at those people out there. There's a sea of people.' It proves yes, we were crazy, but we were not stupid and this was a good idea. This is all the life that we need. It was so amazing. Like we were talking a little off-camera, it was so great to connect with people and everyone is so engaged here. I guess, I don't know, if 'rock show' was a verb, they know how to 'rock show' here."
On always wearing high heels onstage:
Lzzy: "In 2011, I think we were out with, I think it was HELLYEAH and STAIND. The guys in that band literally bought me Chuck Taylors because they got kind of sick of me walking around in heels. So, they're, like, 'Please, for a couple of shows, wear Chuck Taylors.' That was the one and only time… I wore Chuck Taylor's for a couple shows and the second show I wore the Chuck Taylors, that was the one and only time I fell onstage. I haven't really bit it onstage in high heels yet. It will happen. It's not about if, it's about when. [Laughs]"
On her continuing ability to deliver strong live vocal performances:
Lzzy: "I can count on less than five fingers the things I can do well, so I'm just going to stick to those. [Laughs] It's crazy; it's literally all I've ever wanted to do in life is sing and play and get out there and rock. It's very humbling to hear that kind of feedback, especially legendary Download."
HALESTORM's latest album, "Vicious", came out in July 2018 via Atlantic. It was recorded at Nashville, Tennessee's Rock Falcon recording studio with producer Nick Raskulinecz (RUSH, ALICE IN CHAINS, DEFTONES).
The group's 19-date summer tour with ALICE COOPER kicks off on July 17 in Allentown, Pennsylvania.
