Heavy Metal Bands To Honor DIMEBAG At Nebraska Concert
January 21, 2005Niz Proskocil of the Omaha World-Herald is reporting that moments after DAMAGEPLAN guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott was shot to death Dec. 8 while performing onstage at a nightclub in Columbus, Ohio, Omaha musician Jeff Yenzer read about the shooting on an Internet Web site.
"I was shocked, mad and sad at the same time because I didn't want to believe something like that happened to anybody, let alone one of the biggest influences in metal," Yenzer said. "Dimebag was an amazing guitarist."
Abbott, nicknamed Dimebag, was best known for the time he spent as guitarist for the band PANTERA, a heavy-metal pioneer. A 25-year-old gunman shot and killed Abbott, along with three others. Two members of DAMAGEPLAN's crew were wounded.
On Saturday (Jan. 22),Yenzer's band, DIELATED, and 13 other hard-rock and heavy metal groups from Omaha, Lincoln, Council Bluffs, Des Moines and Columbus will pay tribute to Abbott at a concert at Lincoln's Royal Grove.
Half of the proceeds from the concert will go to the families of those killed in the shooting. The other half will go to a fund that was established to help pay the medical expenses of those wounded.
"It's great to see so many bands coming together for a great cause, and it really shows the hearts of every band involved," Yenzer said.
The benefit concert is being organized by Dream Weaver Entertainment, a local event production company.
Company spokeswoman Liz Foral said the bands will perform a variety of DAMAGEPLAN and PANTERA songs. There also will be a silent auction and a candlelight vigil. Family members of the victims are expected to attend, Foral said.
"Dimebag Darrell was a legend in the metal industry," she said. "His death has really impacted a lot of the bands here in the local scene and internationally."
In addition to DIELATED, bands scheduled to perform are SINSOIL, CONTUSION, RANDOM DISFIGUREMENT, IDLE APATHY, BLOOD COW, WESTSIDE PROLETARIAT, DOWNSHIFT, VIOLENT IMPACT, DEAD ECHOES, DIRTFEDD, VOLUME DEALER, EXIT SANITY and NARCOTIC SELF.
