HIRAX To Headline KUSF's 'Thrash Of The Quintana' Anniversary Show

April 18, 2005

HIRAX will headline KUSF Rampage Radio's 23rd anniversary concert on Friday, May 13 at The Pound in San Francisco.

The show is dubbed "Thrash of the Quintana" in honor of Ron Quintana, who has supported the Bay Area metal scene since the early eighties by promoting bands through his radio show on KUSF and as the editor of Metal Mania fanzine.

Quintana's most notable moment in metal history is when he asked a not-so-famous friend of his, Lars Ulrich, to help him pick a name for his new fanzine. Lars looked the list over, spied the name "Metallica," and told Ron to call the fanzine "Metal Mania." METALLICA went on to become a household name and Metal Mania became a staple in the underground, introducing metal fans to unsigned bands across the country, as well as exposing them to a large dose of punk, hardcore, and New Wave of British Heavy Metal.

Katon W. De Pena, vocalist of HIRAX, first met Quintana in 1984 when the band played a show in San Francisco. Since then, De Pena has been a guest many times on Ron's "Rampage Radio" program and HIRAX was regularly included in Metal Mania as well.

"Ron is a true genius when it comes to metal," De Pena said. "He definitely helped the thrash scene expand and got it more recognition worldwide."

HIRAX's last San Francisco appearance was June 2004 when they headlined the Saturday show for the Tidal Wave 666 Festival at the John McLaren Park Amphitheatre.

Also scheduled to appear at the "Thrash of the Quintana" concert are OLD GRANDAD, BROCAS HELM and SAY BOK GWAI.

HIRAX contributed the track "Hostile Territory" to the forthcoming compilation "Louder Than Hell" (Mordam Records),which will be released on April 19. The compilation also features THE ACCUSED, TOXIC NARCOTIC, MUNICIPAL WASTE, and VOETSEK.

HIRAX continues to tour, including a first-time appearance in Mexico, in support of their latest album "The New Age Of Terror", which was released last May.
