JEFF GUTT Explains Why STONE TEMPLE PILOTS Haven't Released Any New Music In Nearly Seven Years

October 28, 2026

In an interview with Andrew Slaidins of The Rockpit's "50 Shades Of Slaids", STONE TEMPLE PILOTS singer Jeff Gutt was asked if there are any plans for him and his bandmates to release new music. He said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): "It's crazy, because Dean's [DeLeo, STP guitarist] put out a few records on his own, and Robert's [DeLeo, STP bassist] put out one, I believe. Maybe two. One, I think. Maybe two; I'm not sure. And I'm actually working on finishing what I was doing, 'cause when I joined STP, I was working on a record and I had to stop. So I'm actually working on finishing that right now. And at some point here we're gonna come together and write some new music together."

Jeff continued: "It has to happen organically where it's something that we're doing in the moment. It can't be something that's really pre-planned too much; otherwise it doesn't… Those things don't tend to work out. 'Cause again, be like, 'Oh, it's 4:00. I gotta sit down and write a song.' It doesn't really work that way. Especially with STP, it's gotta be very organic and real. So, yeah, we're just working on our other things right now, and when we get to that, it'll happen. It'll probably happen quickly too, because that's how those things tend to go."

STONE TEMPLE PILOTS features three original members — Robert, Dean and drummer Eric Kretz.

Gutt, a 50-year-old Michigan native who spent time in the early-2000s nu-metal act DRY CELL, among other bands, and was a contestant on "The X Factor", joined STONE TEMPLE PILOTS after beating out roughly 15,000 hopefuls during an extended search that began more than a year earlier.

Original STONE TEMPLE PILOTS singer Scott Weiland, who reunited with the group in 2010 after an eight-year hiatus but was dismissed in 2013, died in December 2015 of a drug overdose.

Chester Bennington, who joined STP in early 2013, departed nearly three years later to spend more time with his main band LINKIN PARK. Bennington committed suicide in July 2017.

STONE TEMPLE PILOTS released their first all-acoustic album, titled "Perdida", in February 2020. The disc was Gutt's second with STP. His recording debut with the group was on its self-titled seventh album, which arrived in March 2018.
