JOHN CORABI Wasn't Very Familiar With MÖTLEY CRÜE's Early Records When He Joined The Band

Former MÖTLEY CRÜE and current THE DEAD DAISIES singer John Corabi was recently interviewed by Jimmy Kay of Canada's The Metal Voice. You can now listen to the chat below. A couple of excerpts follow (transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET).

On whether the MÖTLEY CRÜE guys were party animals when he joined the band:

Corabi: "To be honest with you, if you remember, they had done the '[Dr.] Feelgood' tour, and they were relatively — 'relatively' is a big word — but they were relatively sober when I joined the band; they weren't really partying. When I first joined, everybody was trying to keep their act together, and eventually, as we got rolling again, everybody kind of started falling into old habits."

On whether he was familiar with MÖTLEY CRÜE's older records when he first joined the band:

Corabi: "I didn't know what to expect. I was just, like, 'I don't even know how I got here.' I was just scratching my head. And no disrespect to the band, I was familiar with their videos and stuff that I had seen on MTV or whatever, but I've gotta be honest with you, a lot of the stuff in the '80s kind of went over my head. My record collection is THE BEATLES, [LED] ZEPPELIN, AEROSMITH, HUMBLE PIE, FREE, BAD COMPANY, CREAM… GRAND FUNK RAILROAD. I was in the band for a year, we had done the [1994] record, we were getting ready to go start rehearsals for the tour, and they wanted me to help to out it… Like, 'Hey, man, you've gotta sing everything. What do you wanna sing? Let's put a setlist together.' And I had to ask them for the records. It was funny. I had been in the band, like, two and a half years, and they were laughing their ass off. They were, like, 'Wait a minute — you don't have any of our records?' And I'm, like, 'No. Not really. No. I don't.' So then Tommy [Lee, drums] goes, 'Dude, have you ever seen us live before?' And I'm, like, 'No.' And they were laughing their ass off. They were, like, 'Oh my God! We picked a guy to lead-sing our band that isn't even a fan of the band. That's just crazy to me.' [And I said,] 'I'm more into GRAND FUNK and [BLACK] SABBATH and all these killer classic '70s bands,' and they just started laughing."

On when he first started suspecting that Vince Neil might be coming back to MÖTLEY CRÜE:

Corabi: "When we were writing 'Generation Swine'. There was rumblings on the street. The thing that kind of bugged me about my exit wasn't about them bringing Vince back, 'cause, look, at the end of the day, I wasn't stupid either; I knew that at any moment, they could kiss and make up. The thing that bugged me is nobody from, at the time, their management company came to me and leveled with me, said, 'Dude, here's the deal. The record label isn't really into this lineup. They're really not gonna support this lineup.' Now they eventually told me… they gave me that speech the day that they told me Vince was coming back. But there was months prior to that where people were talking about Vince coming back, and I would ask them about it, and they would say, 'No way, dude. It's never gonna happen. It's never gonna happen. It's never gonna happen. We're not taking a step backwards. [We're] not gonna do it, not gonna do it.' And if they would have just said, 'Hey, man, yeah, there's a possibility. We're talking.' I would have been, like, 'Okay. I totally get it.' I'm not stupid. So there was part of me that just wished that everybody could have been a little more on the table about everything. That's probably my biggest beef."

On whether he thinks he will be included in the film adaptation of MÖTLEY CRÜE's biography, "The Dirt - Confessions Of The World's Most Notorious Rock Band":

Corabi: "Well, if it's true to the book, then there will be a small segment where it talks about me. But I'm not expecting it. Maybe they'll go out… maybe it'll end on the fact that they went out and they sold 15 million copies of 'Dr. Feelgood' or five million copies of 'Decade Of Decadence'. I don't know."

On February 16, Corabi released a live album of his performance of MÖTLEY CRÜE's entire 1994 self-titled album, recorded on October 27, 2015 in Nashville, Tennessee. "Live '94: One Night In Nashville" documents the album in its entirety along with the bonus track "10,000 Miles" which was originally released as a bonus track on the Japanese version of the "Quaternary" EP.
