KISS Is 'Relieved' Former Drummer PETER CRISS Is Cancer-Free

October 9, 2009

The current members of KISS have released a statement in response to original KISS drummer's revelation that over the last year he's battled breast cancer. Now cancer-free, Criss posted a message on his web site to inform people about it and encourage men and women to get checked — just in time for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. He wrote, "In '08, I was diagnosed with breast cancer, but with (early detection) my great doctor Alex Swistel and staff and the Lord above, who always looks over me, I am cancer-free today!!!" Criss added: "I wanted to let you know men get it like women do. Don't be afraid to let someone know if you have a lump. Do the right thing for you and your loved ones and get it checked. Man or woman, there is no discrimination with breast cancer ... we all don't have nine lives."

In an open letter to their former bandmate, Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons — along with current KISS drummer Eric Singer and guitarist Tommy Thayer — wrote, "We were all shocked to learn of your recent bout with breast cancer, but so relieved to hear that you are now cancer-free. Thank you for sharing this personal matter by posting this important message and alerting everyone to breast cancer awareness and the need for early detection. We're in your corner and wish you continued good health."

KISS is among the potential nominees for the upcoming Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame inductions. Criss is glad to be part of it, noting, "I would like to thank the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame for the nomination and recognition of the original KISS. As a founding member, I am deeply grateful to the Hall Of Fame for their consideration. It would be an honor and a dream come true to be inducted."

Criss first left KISS in 1980. Since then he's worked with other bands and released solo albums. He teamed up with KISS again for a few gigs in the 1990s and most recently in 2004. He was replaced by Eric Singer.
