KORN To Release New Album Via GEFFEN RECORDS?

July 12, 2005

KORN appear to have inked a deal with Geffen Records for their label imprint, Elementree Records (which had previously gone through Warner Bros.),leading to speculation that the group's next studio effort may end up being released via Geffen (in a special arrangement involving a brand-new label imprint, possibly called Korn Records). A KORN-Geffen pairing would make sense in light of the fact that Geffen President Jordan Schur is said to be close to both the band and their manager. However, Sony Music, who have the band's back catalog, are believed to have put in a strong offer as well.

In an interview with the Boston Globe conducted late last year, KORN guitarist James "Munky" Shaffer spoke about the end of the group's long-term commitment to Sony and their plan to start their own label for the release of their next project.

"It's kind of like paying off a loan. You think, 'I'm free!' " said Shaffer. "I remember sitting down in Los Angeles 10 years ago and signing with Sony. The lawyers were there, but we were just excited kids drooling and ready to go out and party. The clause in the contract said 'seven albums,' and we thought, 'Well, we only have one right now.' But here we are. We made it.

"We're still focused on what we want to do, but now instead of getting $2 per album, we'll get $8." Shaffer added, "Sony has been good to us, and we'll probably have them still distribute the albums."

KORN are currently mixing their new album with producers Matrix (AVRIL LAVIGNE, THE MOONEY SUZUKI) and Atticus Ross (BAD RELIGION, PINK),who are responsible for most of the production duties on the follow-up to 2003's "Take a Look in the Mirror". Only one track from the band's sessions with Dallas Austin is slated to appear on the effort, with the album's previously announced collaboration with rapper THE GAME, "Revolution", having already been scratched from the album's track list. Songtitles set to appear on the CD include "Liar", "Politix", "Last Legal Drug", "Le Petit Mort", "It's Me Again", "Coming Undone", "I've Seen It All" and "Souvenir of Sadness". An October release is expected.

KORN's last release, "Greatest Hits, Vol. 1" (Immortal/Epic),featuring highlights from the first 10 years of the band's recording career, has sold 925,098 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
